  1. Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) are the most common user authentication method for in-person banking transactions at ATMs. The US Federal Reserve reported that, in 2018, PINs secured 31.4 billion transactions in the US, with an overall worth of US$ 1.19 trillion. One well-known attack type involves the use of cameras to spy on the ATM PIN pad during PIN entry. Countermeasures include covering the PIN pad with a shield or with the other hand while typing. Although this protects PINs from visual attacks, acoustic emanations from the PIN pad itself open the door for another attack type. In this paper, we show the feasibility of an acoustic side-channel attack (called PinDrop) to reconstruct PINs by profiling acoustic signatures of individual keys of a PIN pad. We demonstrate the practicality of PinDrop via two sets of data collection experiments involving two commercially available metal PIN pad models and 58 participants who entered a total of 5,800 5-digit PINs. We simulated two realistic attack scenarios: (1) a microphone placed near the ATM (0.3 m away) and (2) a real-time attacker (with a microphone) standing in the queue at a common courtesy distance of 2 m. In the former case, we show that PinDrop recovers 96% of 4-digit, and up to 94% of 5-digits, PINs. Whereas, at 2 m away, it recovers up to 57% of 4-digit, and up to 39% of 5-digit PINs in three attempts. We believe that these results are both

  2. Many goal-directed actions that require rapid visuomotor planning and perceptual decision-making are affected in older adults, causing difficulties in execution of many functional activities of daily living. Visuomotor planning and perceptual identification are mediated by the dorsal and ventral visual streams, respectively, but it is unclear how age-induced changes in sensory processing in these streams contribute to declines in visuomotor decision-making performance. Previously, we showed that in young adults, task demands influenced movement strategies during visuomotor decision-making, reflecting differential integration of sensory information between the two streams. Here, we asked the question if older adults would exhibit deficits in interactions between the two streams during demanding motor tasks. Older adults ( n = 15) and young controls ( n = 26) performed reaching or interception movements toward virtual objects. In some blocks of trials, participants also had to select an appropriate movement goal based on the shape of the object. Our results showed that older adults corrected fewer initial decision errors during both reaching and interception movements. During the interception decision task, older adults made more decision- and execution-related errors than young adults, which were related to early initiation of their movements. Together, these results suggest that older adults have a reduced ability to integrate new perceptual information to guide online action, which may reflect impaired ventral-dorsal stream interactions. NEW & NOTEWORTHY Older adults show declines in vision, decision-making, and motor control, which can lead to functional limitations. We used a rapid visuomotor decision task to examine how these deficits may interact to affect task performance. Compared with healthy young adults, older adults made more errors in both decision-making and motor execution, especially when the task required intercepting moving targets. This suggests that age-related declines in integrating perceptual and motor information may contribute to functional deficits.

  3. Reaching movements performed from a crouched body posture require a shift of body weight from both arms to one arm. This situation has remained unexamined despite the analogous load requirements during step initiation and the many studies of reaching from a seated or standing posture. To determine whether the body weight shift involves anticipatory or exclusively reactive control, we obtained force plate records, hand kinematics, and arm muscle activity from 11 healthy right-handed participants. They performed reaching movements with their left and right arm in two speed contexts, “comfortable” and “as fast as possible,” and two postural contexts, a less stable knees-together posture and a more stable knees-apart posture. Weight-shifts involved anticipatory postural actions (APAs) by the reaching and stance arms that were opposing in the vertical axis and aligned in the side-to-side axis similar to APAs by the legs for step initiation. Weight-shift APAs were correlated in time and magnitude, present in both speed contexts, more vigorous with the knees placed together, and similar when reaching with the dominant and nondominant arm. The initial weight-shift was preceded by bursts of muscle activity in the shoulder and elbow extensors (posterior deltoid and triceps lateral) of the reach arm and shoulder flexor (pectoralis major) of the stance arm, which indicates their causal role; leg muscles may have indirectly contributed but were not recorded. The strong functional similarity of weight-shift APAs during crouched reaching to human stepping and cat reaching suggests that they are a core feature of posture-movement coordination. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This work demonstrates that reaching from a crouched posture is preceded by bimanual anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) that shift the body weight to the stance limb. Weight-shift APAs are more robust in an unstable body posture (knees together) and involve the shoulder and elbow extensors of the reach arm and shoulder flexor of the stance arm. This pattern mirrors the forelimb coordination of cats reaching and humans initiating a step.

    Limb dominance is evident in many daily activities, leading to the prominent idea that each hemisphere of the brain specializes in controlling different aspects of movement. Past studies suggest that the dominant arm is primarily controlled via an internal model of limb dynamics that enables the nervous system to produce efficient movements. In contrast, the nondominant arm may be primarily controlled via impedance mechanisms that rely on the strong modulation of sensory feedback from individual joints to control limb posture. We tested whether such differences are evident in behavioral responses and stretch reflexes following sudden displacement of the arm during posture control. Experiment 1 applied specific combinations of elbow-shoulder torque perturbations (the same for all participants). Peak joint displacements, return times, end point accuracy, and the directional tuning and amplitude of stretch reflexes in nearly all muscles were not statistically different between the two arms. Experiment 2 induced specific combinations of joint motion (the same for all participants). Again, peak joint displacements, return times, end point accuracy, and the directional tuning and amplitude of stretch reflexes in nearly all muscles did not differ statistically when countering the imposed loads with each arm. Moderate to strong correlations were found between stretch reflexes and behavioral responses to the perturbations with the two arms across both experiments. Collectively, the results do not support the idea that the dominant arm specializes in exploiting internal models and the nondominant arm in impedance control by increasing reflex gains to counter sudden loads imposed on the arms during posture control. NEW & NOTEWORTHY A prominent hypothesis is that the nervous system controls the dominant arm through predictive internal models and the nondominant arm through impedance mechanisms. We tested whether stretch reflexes of muscles in the two arms also display such specialization during posture control. Nearly all behavioral responses and stretch reflexes did not differ statistically but were strongly correlated between the arms. The results indicate individual signatures of feedback control that are common for the two arms.

    Perception of limb position and motion combines sensory information from spindles in muscles that span one joint (monoarticulars) and two joints (biarticulars). This anatomical organization should create interactions in estimating limb position. We developed two models, one with only monoarticulars and one with both monoarticulars and biarticulars, to explore how biarticulars influence estimates of arm position in hand ( x, y) and joint ( shoulder, elbow) coordinates. In hand coordinates, both models predicted larger medial-lateral than proximal-distal errors, although the model with both muscle groups predicted that biarticulars would reduce this bias. In contrast, the two models made significantly different predictions in joint coordinates. The model with only monoarticulars predicted that errors would be uniformly distributed because estimates of angles at each joint would be independent. In contrast, the model that included biarticulars predicted that errors would be coupled between the two joints, resulting in smaller errors for combinations of flexion or extension at both joints and larger errors for combinations of flexion at one joint and extension at the other joint. We also carried out two experiments to examine errors made by human subjects during an arm position matching task in which a robot passively moved one arm to different positions and the subjects moved their other arm to mirror-match each position. Errors in hand coordinates were similar to those predicted by both models. Critically, however, errors in joint coordinates were only similar to those predicted by the model with monoarticulars and biarticulars. These results highlight how biarticulars influence perceptual estimates of limb position by helping to minimize medial-lateral errors. NEW & NOTEWORTHY It is unclear how sensory information from muscle spindles located within muscles spanning multiple joints influences perception of body position and motion. We address this issue by comparing errors in estimating limb position made by human subjects with predicted errors made by two musculoskeletal models, one with only monoarticulars and one with both monoarticulars and biarticulars. We provide evidence that biarticulars produce coupling of errors between joints, which help to reduce errors.

    Motor behavior often occurs in environments with multiple goal options that can vary during the ongoing action. We explored this situation by requiring subjects to select between different target options during an ongoing reach. During split trials the original target was replaced with a left and a right flanking target, and participants had to select between them. This contrasted with the standard jump trials, where the original target would be replaced with a single flanking target, left or right. When participants were instructed to follow their natural tendency, they all tended to select the split target nearest the original. The near-target preference was more prominent with increased spatial disparity between the options and when participants could preview the potential options. Moreover, explicit instruction to obtain the “far” target during split trials resulted many errors compared with a “near” instruction, ~50% vs. ~15%. Online reaction times to target change were delayed in split trials compared with jump trials, ~200 ms vs. ~150 ms, but also highly automatic. Trials in which the instructed far target was correctly obtained were delayed by a further ~50 ms, unlike those in which the near target was incorrectly obtained. We also observed nonspecific responses from arm muscles at the jump trial latency during split trials. Taken together, our results indicate that online selection of reach targets is automatically linked to the spatial distribution of the options, though at greater delays than redirecting to a single target. NEW & NOTEWORTHY This work demonstrates that target selection during an ongoing reach is automatically linked to the option nearest a voided target. Online reaction times for two options are longer than redirection to a single option. Attempts to override the near-target tendency result in a high number of errors at the normal delay and further delays when the attempt is successful.

  7. State-of-the-art password guessing tools, such as HashCat and John the Ripper, enable users to check billions of passwords per second against password hashes. In addition to performing straightforward dictionary attacks, these tools can expand password dictionaries using password generation rules, such as concatenation of words (e.g., “password123456”) and leet speak (e.g., “password” becomes “p4s5w0rd”). Although these rules work well in practice, creating and expanding them to model further passwords is a labor-intensive task that requires specialized expertise. To address this issue, in this paper we introduce PassGAN, a novel approach that replaces human-generated password rules with theory-grounded machine learning algorithms. Instead of relying on manual password analysis, PassGAN uses a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) to autonomously learn the distribution of real passwords from actual password leaks, and to generate high-quality password guesses. Our experiments show that this approach is very promising. When we evaluated PassGAN on two large password datasets, we were able to surpass rule-based and state-of-the-art machine learning password guessing tools. However, in contrast with the other tools, PassGAN achieved this result without any a-priori knowledge on passwords or common password structures. Additionally, when we combined the output of PassGAN with the output of HashCat, we were able to match 51%–73% more passwords than with HashCat alone. This is remarkable, because it shows that PassGAN can autonomously extract a considerable number of password properties that current state-of-the art rules do not encode.

This paper introduces DISPERSE, a distributed scalable architecture for delivery of content and services that provides resilience against node failure through location-independent storage and replication of content. Current content delivery networks (CDNs) have, at least to some degree, a centralized structure thus susceptible to a single point of failure. DISPERSE addresses this limitation by implementing a fully de-centralized structure. DISPERSE is a two-layer architecture: the first layer (front-end layer) exposes services (e.g., Web, SFTP) to clients; the second layer (back-end layer) provides reliable distributed storage of content and application state. Content in DISPERSE's back-end layer is stored and exchanged as Named Data Network (NDN) content objects. This allows DISPERSE to implement fine-grained, location-independent, fully decentralized content replication mechanisms. We validate the performance of DISPERSE under two node failure scenarios. In the first scenario, content can be stored in any DISPERSE node, and all nodes are equally likely to fail. In this scenario, we use non-linear optimization techniques to determine the optimal number of content copies under availability and latency constraints. In the second scenario, different nodes fail with different probabilities, and content is stored in nodes according to its value, node failure probability, and resource availability. This scenario is addressed as an instance of the minimum cost flow problem. Our results show that DISPERSE reduces the failure of content retrieval by five orders of magnitude compared to common CDN implementations, without significantly increasing content retrieval delay. Further, numerical results show that DISPERSE improves content availability by a factor of 1.3x-2.3x when deploying the minimum cost flow algorithm.
