Title: 3-D PRINTING OF DIELECTRIC ELECTROACTIVE POLYMER ACTUATORS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF DIELECTRIC FLEXIBLE MATERIALS
Dielectric electroactive polymers are materials capable of mechanically adjusting their volume in response to an electrical stimulus. However, currently these materials require multi-step manufacturing processes which are not additive. This paper presents a novel 3D printed flexible dielectric material and characterizes its use as a dielectric electroactive polymer (DEAP) actuator. The 3D printed material was characterized electrically and mechanically and its functionality as a dielectric electroactive polymer actuator was demonstrated. The flexible 3-D printed material demonstrated a high dielectric constant and ideal stress-strain performance in tensile testing making the 3-D printed material ideal for use as a DEAP actuator. The tensile stress- strain properties were measured on samples printed under three different conditions (three printing angles 0°, 45° and 90°). The results demonstrated the flexible material presents different responses depending on the printing angle. Based on these results, it was possible to determine that the active structure needs low pre-strain to perform a visible contractive displacement when voltage is applied to the electrodes. The actuator produced an area expansion of 5.48% in response to a 4.3 kV applied voltage, with an initial pre-strain of 63.21% applied to the dielectric material.  more » « less

  1. Dielectric electroactive polymers (DEAPs) represent a subclass of smart materials that are capable of converting between electrical and mechanical energy. These materials can be used as energy harvesters, sensors, and actuators. However, current production and testing of these devices is limited and requires multiple step processes for fabrication. This paper presents an alternate production method via 3D printing using Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) as a dielectric elastomer. This study provides electromechanical characterization of flexible dielectric films produced by additive manufacturing and demonstrates their use as DEAP actuators. The dielectric material characterization of TPU includes: measurement of the dielectric constant, percentage radial elongation, tensile properties, pre-strain effects on actuation, surface topography, and measured actuation under high voltage. The results demonstrated a high dielectric constant and ideal elongation performance for this material, making the material suitable for use as a DEAP actuator. In addition, it was experimentally determined that the tensile properties of the material depend on the printing angle and thickness of the samples thereby making these properties controllable using 3D printing. Using surface topography, it was possible to analyze how the printing path, affects the roughness of the films and consequently affects the voltage breakdown of the structure and creates preferential deformation directions. Actuators produced with concentric circle paths produced an area expansion of 4.73% uniformly in all directions. Actuators produced with line paths produced an area expansion of 5.71% in the direction where the printed lines are parallel to the deformation direction, and 4.91% in the direction where the printed lines are perpendicular to the deformation direction.

Additive manufacturing, otherwise known as three-dimensional (3D) printing, is a rapidly growing technique that is increasingly used for the production of polymer products, resulting in an associated increase in plastic waste generation. Waste from a particular class of 3D-printing, known as vat photopolymerization, is of particular concern, as these materials are typically thermosets that cannot be recycled or reused. Here, we report a mechanical recycling process that uses cryomilling to generate a thermoset powder from photocured parts that can be recycled back into the neat liquid monomer resin. Mechanical recycling with three different materials is demonstrated: two commercial resins with characteristic brittle and elastic mechanical properties and a third model material formulated in-house. Studies using photocured films showed that up to 30 wt% of the model material could be recycled producing a toughness of 2.01 ± 0.55 MJ/m3, within error of neat analogues (1.65 ± 0.27 MJ/m3). Using dynamic mechanical analysis and atomic force microscopy-based infrared spectroscopy, it was determined that monomers diffuse into the recycled powder particles, creating interpenetrating networks upon ultraviolet (UV) exposure. This process mechanically adheres the particles to the matrix, preventing them from acting as failure sites under a tensile load. Finally, 3D-printing of the commercial brittle material with 10 wt% recycle content produced high quality parts that were visually similar. The maximum stress (46.7 ± 6.2 MPa) and strain at break (11.6 ± 2.3%) of 3D-printed parts with recycle content were within error the same as neat analogues (52.0 ± 1.7 MPa; 13.4 ± 1.8%). Overall, this work demonstrates mechanical recycling of photopolymerized thermosets and shows promise for the reuse of photopolymerized 3D-printing waste.

  3. This work presents 3D printed polymer-based flexible electrode substrates exhibiting high surface area and flexibility in reverse electrowetting-on-dielectric energy harvesting for powering patchable human health monitoring sensors. Composite electrode substrates are printed using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer and carbon black in 20:1 ratio by weight to provide some mechanical strength to the electrodes. Thin film layers of titanium for current collection and aluminum oxide as dielectric are deposited on the substrates to complete the electrode fabrication process. Without applying any bias voltage, the AC current due to periodic variance in capacitance resulting from mechanical modulation of an electrolyte droplet between two electrodes is measured for a low frequency range that falls within human motion activities. Mechanical integrity of the electrodes are characterized in terms of stress-strain analysis demonstrating robustness of their longevity.

    Soft polymer actuators are in increasing demand due to their more fluid like motion and flexibility when actuated than compared with rigid actuators, which makes them valuable in diverse engineering applications. One of the main types of soft polymer actuators is the dielectric elastomer actuator, whose working principle is to apply a voltage potential difference between electrodes to reduce the thickness of the elastomeric material while expanding its area. This paper looks at manufacturing a micro soft polymer dielectric elastomer actuator utilizing two-photon polymerization 3D printing. The actuator contains micro channels that are filled with an electrode by using capillary action. A complex helical geometry is designed, printed, and tested for electrode filling capabilities. Quite a few obstacles are described in this paper including the use of a newly released two-photon polymerization resin which has limited supporting resources, as well as the complex helical geometry having a large compliance that vastly complicates its fabrication, post-processing, handling, electrode filling, electrode integration, and actuation testing. However, these challenges are overcome by using the standard printing recipes currently available for the resins, adding electrode isolation layers, and printing thicker elastomer zones for more structural support. The results found solidify the approach of filling microchannels with electrodes through capillary action and lead to further the focus and creation of multi-functional micro soft actuators.

    Dielectric elastomer (DE) materials, a category of electroactive polymers, can be used to design actuators that are flexible, resilient, lightweight, and durable. However, due to the uncertainties in its actuation dynamics, DE actuators always rely on feedback control to perform accurate and safe operations. In this paper, a tubular dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA) with self-sensing capability is developed. It does not require external devices to measure displacement for feedback control. The displacement of the actuator is controlled using a proportional-integral controller with the capacitance measured at high probing frequency as the self-sensing mechanism component of the actuator. By superimposing actuation and probing voltage and applying them to the DE tube, the actuation voltage activates the movement of the DE tube and the probing voltage is used for self-sensing. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is then used to filter a given frequency of the probing current and voltage and then calculate the capacitance from the probing current and voltage during each time window. With the relationship between capacitance and displacement of the DE tube, the displacement output is estimated online and self-sensing without an external sensor is achieved. The self-sensing signal is then used as a feedback signal in a closed-loop design to follow a reference signal for tracking. The experimental results validate the self-sensing of the DE actuator in feedback control.
