The integration of electric vehicles (EVs) into the electric power distribution system poses numerous challenges and opportunities for optimizing energy management and system operations. Electric vehicle grid interfaces (EVGIs), essentially bidirectional power converters, allow for charging/grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and discharging/vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power transfers. A power dispatch estimation (PDE) model for V2G, based on availability of EVs in a distribution system and capabilities of the distribution system, is needed to assist in grid operations. This paper presents the development of a PDE model based on nodal power flows to capture the complex spatiotemporal dependencies inherent in G2V and V2G patterns. The hierarchical structure of a distribution system, feeder to EVGI node, is taken into consideration for PDE. Typical PDE estimation results are presented for the IEEE 34 test node feeder distribution system allocated with EVGIs.

On the Rising Interdependency between the Power Grid, ICT Network, and E-Mobility: Modeling and Analysis
Boosting critical infrastructures’ (CIs) preparedness to threats, including natural disasters and manmade attacks, is a global imperative. The intrinsic dependencies and interdependencies between CIs hinder their resiliency. Moreover, the evolution of CIs is, in many cases, en routè to tighten those interdependencies. The goal of this paper is to uncover and analyze the rising interdependency between the electric power grid, information and communication technology (ICT) networks, and transportation systems that are heavily reliant on electric-power drivetrains, collectively referred to hereafter as electro-mobility (e-mobility). E-mobility includes electric vehicles (EVs) and electric railway systems. A new influence graph-based model is introduced, as a promising approach to model operational interdependencies between CIs. Each of the links of the influence graph represents the probability of failure of the sink node following a failure of the source node. A futuristic scenario has been analyzed assuming increased dependency of the power grid on ICT for monitoring and control, and high penetration levels of EVs and distributed energy resources (DERs) in an urban region. Inspecting the influence graph shows that the impact of interdependency between the power grid, the ICT network, and the transportation network, for the case study analyzed in this paper, does not lead to failures during normal operation with proper design; however, it is severe during emergency conditions since it leads to failure propagation among the three CIs. This paper sets the stage for more research on this topic, and calls for more attention to interdependency analysis.

The development of new technologies is increasing transportation electrification and electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to become even more popular in coming years. High EV adoption rates can increase the potential to use EVs as an energy resource and operate in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H). This paper focuses on the resilience analysis of using EVs and roof-top solar photovoltaic systems (PVs) to provide power support in network microgrids (MGs) experiencing an outage due to extreme weather conditions. To determine the effectiveness of using EVs and PVs as backup energy resources, a set of resilience metrics are evaluated for different cases and duration. Simulation results show that the management of EVs and PVs in residential networked MGs could provide power support for several hours during the restoration of a distribution system experiencing an outage.more » « less

This paper examines an application of a two-lane microscopic Traffic Flow (TF) simulation to comprehend the impact of the complex behavior of Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT) charging systems onto electric power distribution grids. The proposed approach utilizes real-world data to determine a more accurate TF density at each time interval. The simulation is carried out considering all vehicles, whether electric vehicles (EVs) or non-electric, and they have a randomized lane changing behavior and fluctuating velocities following a leading car model. Three different scenarios are conducted for 5 mile, 10 mile, and 15 mile DWPT networks that are proportionally connected to an IEEE 33-bus distribution grid. Our findings indicate that EVs' average State-of-Charge (SOC) increases proportionally and significantly at each DWPT network length. Furthermore, the load demand generated from the DWPT network also increases proportionally with its length; and this increment in load demand causes adverse impacts on distribution grid voltage magnitudes exceeding operational standards that leads to equipment failure or blackout events.more » « less

As electric vehicles (EVs) gradually replace fuel vehicles and provide transportation services in cities, e.g., electric taxi fleets, solar-powered charging stations with energy storage systems have been deployed to provide charging services for EV fleets. The mixture of solar-powered and traditional charging stations brings efficiency challenges to charging stations and reliability challenges to power systems. In this article, we explore e-taxis’ mobility and charging demand flexibility to co-optimize service quality of e-taxi fleets and system cost of charging infrastructures, e.g., solar power under-utilization and reliability issues of power distribution networks due to reverse power flow. We propose SAC, an e-taxi coordination framework to dispatch e-taxis for charging or serving passengers under spatial-temporal dynamics of renewable energy and passenger mobility, which integrates the renewable power generation estimation from a forecast system. Moreover, we extend our design to a stochastic Model Predictive Control problem to handle the uncertainty of solar power generation, aiming to fully utilize generated solar power. Our data-driven evaluation shows that SAC significantly outperforms existing solutions, enhancing the usage rate of solar power by up to 172.6%, while maintaining e-taxi service quality with very small overhead, i.e., reducing the supply-demand ratio by 2.2%.more » « less

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is underway globally and EVs are expected to become more widely adopted in the coming years. One of the main characteristics of EVs is that they are not only seen as mean for transportation but also potentially as a flexible energy storage resource in vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications. This paper proposes a resilience analysis on the feasibility of using EVs for power restoration and supply of residential networked microgrids (MGs) experiencing a power outage due to extreme weather. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of utilizing EVs as a backup power supply during an outage, various case studies are presented considering different scenarios and resilience metrics. Test results demonstrate that EVs can satisfy the energy requirements of a residential household for more than 6 hours but, also provide power to the distribution grid through MG aggregation.more » « less
