In this paper, we develop the analytical framework for a novel Wireless signal-based Sensing capability for Robotics (WSR) by leveraging a robots’ mobility in 3D space. It allows robots to primarily measure relative direction, or Angle-of-Arrival (AOA), to other robots, while operating in non-line-of-sight unmapped environments and without requiring external infrastructure. We do so by capturing all of the paths that a wireless signal traverses as it travels from a transmitting to a receiving robot in the team, which we term as an AOA profile. The key intuition behind our approach is to enable a robot to emulate antenna arrays as it moves freely in 2D and 3D space. The small differences in the phase of the wireless signals are thus processed with knowledge of robots’ local displacement to obtain the profile, via a method akin to Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Active Rendezvous for Multi-Robot Pose Graph Optimization using Sensing over Wi-Fi
We present a novel framework for collaboration amongst a team of robots performing Pose Graph Optimization (PGO) that addresses two important challenges for multi-robot SLAM: i) that of enabling information exchange "on-demand" via Active Rendezvous without using a map or the robot's location, and ii) that of rejecting outlying measurements. Our key insight is to exploit relative position data present in the communication channel between robots to improve groundtruth accuracy of PGO. We develop an algorithmic and experimental framework for integrating Channel State Information (CSI) with multi-robot PGO; it is distributed, and applicable in low-lighting or featureless environments where traditional sensors often fail. We present extensive experimental results on actual robots and observe that using Active Rendezvous results in a 64% reduction in ground truth pose error and that using CSI observations to aid outlier rejection reduces ground truth pose error by 32%. These results show the potential of integrating communication as a novel sensor for SLAM.

In this paper, we propose a real-time deep-learning approach for determining the 6D relative pose of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV) from a single image. A team of autonomous robots localizing themselves, in a communicationconstrained underwater environment, is essential for many applications such as underwater exploration, mapping, multirobot convoying, and other multi-robot tasks. Due to the profound difficulty of collecting ground truth images with accurate 6D poses underwater, this work utilizes rendered images from the Unreal Game Engine simulation for training. An image translation network is employed to bridge the gap between the rendered and the real images producing synthetic images for training. The proposed method predicts the 6D pose of an AUV from a single image as 2D image keypoints representing 8 corners of the 3D model of the AUV, and then the 6D pose in the camera coordinates is determined using RANSACbased PnP. Experimental results in underwater environments (swimming pool and ocean) with different cameras demonstrate the robustness of the proposed technique, where the trained system decreased translation error by 75.5\% and orientation error by 64.6\% over the state-of-the-art methods.

Recovering rigid registration between successive camera poses lies at the heart of 3D reconstruction, SLAM and visual odometry. Registration relies on the ability to compute discriminative 2D features in successive camera images for determining feature correspondences, which is very challenging in feature-poor environments, i.e. low-texture and/or low-light environments. In this paper, we aim to address the challenge of recovering rigid registration between successive camera poses in feature-poor environments in a Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) setting. In addition to inertial sensing, we instrument a small aerial robot with an RGBD camera and propose a framework that unifies the incorporation of 3D geometric entities: points, lines, and planes. The tracked 3D geometric entities provide constraints in an Extended Kalman Filtering framework. We show that by directly exploiting 3D geometric entities, we can achieve improved registration. We demonstrate our approach on different texture-poor environments, with some containing only flat texture-less surfaces providing essentially no 2D features for tracking. In addition, we evaluate how the addition of different 3D geometric entities contributes to improved pose estimation by comparing an estimated pose trajectory to a ground truth pose trajectory obtained from a motion capture system. In this paper, we consider the problem of distributed pose graph optimization (PGO) that has extensive applications in multi-robot simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). We propose majorization minimization methods for distributed PGO and show that our proposed methods are guaranteed to converge to first-order critical points under mild conditions. Furthermore, since our proposed methods rely a proximal operator of distributed PGO, the convergence rate can be significantly accelerated with Nesterov’s method, and more importantly, the acceleration induces no compromise of theoretical guarantees. In addition, we also present accelerated majorization minimization methods for the distributed chordal initialization that have a quadratic convergence, which can be used to compute an initial guess for distributed PGO. The efficacy of this work is validated through applications on a number of 2D and 3D SLAM datasets and comparisons with existing state-of-the-art methods, which indicates that our proposed methods have faster convergence and result in better solutions to distributed PGO.
