Title: Comparison of various models for piezoelectric receivers in wireless acoustic power transfer
Piezoelectric transduction has lately been employed in wireless acoustic power transfer (APT) for powering electronic components that cannot be accessed easily, such as deep-implanted medical devices. Typically, the axial (or thickness) vibration mode of piezoelectric materials is used to generate acoustic waves that propagate through a medium, which are then converted back into electricity and delivered to an electrical load at the receiver end. The piezoelectric receiver can have various aspect ratios (length/diameter) in a given APT application. This work aims to develop and compare various models, such as the classical theory, Rayleigh’s theory, and Bishop’s theory, as well as finite-element model simulations, for different aspect ratios with an emphasis on those with comparable dimensions. Following analytical modeling and numerical simulation efforts, both in air and fluid loaded impedance frequency response functions are compared to report the valid aspect ratio ranges of the respective theories and their limitations, along with comparisons against experiments.  more » « less

  1. Ultrasound acoustic energy transfer systems are receiving growing attention in the area of contactless energy transfer for its advantages over other approaches, such as inductive coupling method. To date, most research on this approach has been on modeling and proof-of-concept experiments in the linear regime where nonlinear effects associated with high excitation levels are not significant. We present an acoustic-electroelastic model of a piezoelectric receiver in water by considering its nonlinear constitutive relations. The theory is based on ideal spherical sound wave propagation in conjunction with the electroelastic distributed-parameter governing equations for the receiver’s vibration and the electrical circuit.

  2. Contactless ultrasound power transfer (UPT) has emerged as one of the promising techniques for wireless power transfer. Physical processes supporting UPT include the vibrations at a transmitting/acoustic source element, acoustic wave propagation, piezoelectric transduction of elastic vibrations at a receiving element, and acoustic-structure interactions at the surfaces of the transmitting and receiving elements. A novel mechanism using a high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) transmitter is proposed for enhanced power transfer in UPT systems. The HIFU source is used for actuating a finite-size piezoelectric disk receiver. The underlying physics of the proposed system includes the coupling of the nonlinear acoustic field with structural responses of the receiver, which leads to spatial resonances and the appearance of higher harmonics during wave propagation in a medium. Acoustic nonlinearity due to wave kinematics in the HIFU-UPT system is modeled by taking into account the effects of diffraction, absorption, and nonlinearity in the medium. Experimentally-validated acoustic-structure interaction formulation is employed in a finite element based multiphysics model. The results show that the HIFU high-level excitation can cause disproportionately large responses in the piezoelectric receiver if the frequency components in the nonlinear acoustic field coincide with the resonant frequencies of the receiver.

  3. We establish a nonlinear nonconservative mathematical framework for the acoustic-electro-elastic dynamics of the response of a piezoelectric disk to high-level acoustic excitation in the context of ultrasound acoustic energy transfer. Nonlinear parameter identification is performed to estimate the parameters representing nonlinear piezoelectric coefficients. The identification is based on exploiting the vibrational response of the disk operating in the thickness mode under dynamic actuation. The nonlinearly coupled electro-elastic governing equations, for the piezoelectric receiver subjected to acoustic excitation, are derived using the generalized Hamilton's principle. The method of multiple scales is used to obtain an approximate solution that forms the basis for parameter identification. The identified coefficients are then experimentally validated. The effects of varying these coefficients on the nonlinear response, optimal resistive electrical loading, and power generation characteristics of the receiver are investigated.

  4. Contactless energy transfer (CET) is a technology that is particularly relevant in applications where wired electrical contact is dangerous or impractical. Furthermore, it would enhance the development, use, and reliability of low-power sensors in applications where changing batteries is not practical or may not be a viable option. One CET method that has recently attracted interest is the ultrasonic acoustic energy transfer, which is based on the reception of acoustic waves at ultrasonic frequencies by a piezoelectric receiver. Patterning and focusing the transmitted acoustic energy in space is one of the challenges for enhancing the power transmission and locally charging sensors or devices. We use a mathematically designed passive metamaterial-based acoustic hologram to selectively power an array of piezoelectric receivers using an unfocused transmitter. The acoustic hologram is employed to create a multifocal pressure pattern in the target plane where the receivers are located inside focal regions. We conduct multiphysics simulations in which a single transmitter is used to power multiple receivers with an arbitrary two-dimensional spatial pattern via wave controlling and manipulation, using the hologram. We show that the multi-focal pressure pattern created by the passive acoustic hologram will enhance the power transmission for most receivers.

  5. A scheme based on the approximate solution determined by the method of multiple scales is proposed for the identification of nonlinear material parameters of a piezoelectric disc. The theoretical approach is experimentally validated to determine these parameters through dynamic electrical actuation. The identified material parameters are then used to investigate the nonlinear electro-elastic behavior of the disk, used as a receiver, in an ultrasound acoustic energy transfer system.
