This paper reports on a fully inclusive co-design process of an informal VR science game intended to be accessible to a broad range of learners. The co-design embraces the `nothing about us without' us movement by ensuring that stakeholder voices have a prominent role throughout the design process. In the project described in this paper, professional designers and researchers work with a team of neurodiverse stakeholders as peer members of the design team. The design process is described, and the findings based on feedback from all co-design participants is reported. Recommendations for others in the field are provided to help guide those interested in implementing an effective and inclusive co-design process.

Catabot: Autonomous Surface Vehicle with an Optimized Design for Environmental Monitoring
This paper presents an optimized design of research-oriented ASVs and a systematic design evaluation methodology for reliable in-water sensing. The objective is to minimize the interference on sensor readings by any ASV maneuver. The design space includes motors and sensors locations. In addition, this paper analyzes modularity - i.e., the effects of new sensor's installation. All prototype designs are thoroughly tested using hydrostatic analyses, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, and real-world field testings. Quantitative metrics, including trim, pitch, velocity magnitude of flow, and turbulence, are used to compare different configurations. Our experiments show that a motor configuration at the back part of the straights hulls is the most optimal design, resulting in high-quality data collection.

This paper presents a simulation and respective analysis of traveling waves from a 5-bus distribution system connected to a grid-forming inverter (GFMI). The goal is to analyze the numerical differences in traveling waves if a GFMI is used in place of a traditional generator. The paper introduces the topic of traveling waves and their use in distribution systems for fault clearing. Then it introduces a Simulink design of said 5-bus system around which this paper is centered. The system is subject to various simulation tests of which the results and design are explained further in the paper to discuss if and how exactly inverters affect traveling waves and how different design choices for the system can impact these waves. Finally, a consideration is made for what these traveling waves represent in a practical environment and how to properly address them using the information derived in this study.more » « less

null (Ed.)Abstract This paper proposes a relationship between design thinking and computational thinking. It describes design thinking and computational thinking as two prominent ways of understanding how people address design problems. It suggests that, currently, each of design thinking and computational thinking is defined and theorized in isolation from the other. A two-dimensional ontological space of the ways that people think in addressing problems is proposed, based on the orientation of the thinker towards problem and solution generality/specificity. Placement of design thinking and computational thinking within this space and discussion of their relationship leads to the suggestion of a dual process model for addressing design problems. It suggests that, in this model, design thinking and computational thinking are processes that are ontological mirror images of each other, and are the two processes by which thinkers address problems. Thinkers can move fluently between the two. The paper makes a contribution towards the theoretical foundations of design thinking and proposes questions about how design thinking and computational thinking might be both investigated and taught as constituent parts of a dual process.more » « less

Participatory design is an essential design strategy for creating artifacts and experiences that reflect the voices of the population being designed for and with. The participatory design process can serve not only to research resulting artifacts but also as an empowering activity for those who participate. This paper explores how participatory design can serve as a context for young participants to enact and voice their emerging identities and reveals how different participatory design activities have unique affordances for supporting this identity enactment. Focusing on a group of 12 and 13-year-old African American girls, this paper presents a case study showing how participatory design activities served as venues for the girls to reflect characteristics of their current identities, project future identities, and apply aspects of their identities to shape materials for others. In doing so, we contribute a case study showing how participatory design allows participants to enact their identities, helping researchers gain insight into characteristics of those they are designing with and for. This paper advances our understanding of participatory design as a design approach for youth, especially as it relates to issues of broadening participation, identity, and equity.more » « less

Deep learning accelerators are important tools for feeding the growing demand for deep learning applications. The automated design of such accelerators--which is important for reducing development costs--can be viewed as a search over a vast and complex design space that consists of all possible accelerators and all the possible software that could run on them. Unfortunately, this search is complicated by the existence of many ordinal and categorical values, which are critical to explore for the ultimate design but are not handled well by existing search techniques. This paper presents a technique for efficiently searching this space by injecting domain information--in this case information about hardware/software (HW/SW) co-design--into the automated search process. Specifically, this paper introduces a novel Bayesian optimization framework called daBO (domain-aware BO) that accepts domain information as input, including those describing ordinal and categorical values. This paper also introduces Spotlight, a design tool based on daBO, and this paper empirically shows that Spotlight produces accelerator designs and software schedules that are orders of magnitude better than those created by the state-of-the-art. For example, for the ResNet-50 deep learning model, Spotlight produces a HW/SW configuration that reduces delay by 135x over the configuration produced by ConfuciuX, a state-of-the-art HW/SW co-design tool, and Spotlight reduces energy-delay product (EDP) by 44x over an Eyeriss-like accelerator, which is an edge-scale hand-designed accelerator. In the realm of cloud-scale accelerators, Spotlight reduces the EDP of a scaled-up Eyeriss-like accelerator by 23x. Our evaluation shows that Spotlight benefits from the efficiency of daBO, which allows Spotlight to identify accelerator designs and software schedules that prior work cannot identify.more » « less
