Title: Snake Graphs from Triangulated Orbifolds
We give an explicit combinatorial formula for the Laurent expansion of any arc or closed curve on an unpunctured triangulated orbifold. We do this by extending the snake graph construction of Musiker, Schiffler, and Williams to unpunctured orbifolds. In the case of an ordinary arc, this gives a combinatorial proof of positivity to the generalized cluster algebra from this orbifold.  more » « less

  1. In this paper, we apply decomposition to orbifolds with quantum symmetries to resolve anomalies. Briefly, it has been argued by, e.g. Wang–Wen–Witten, Tachikawa that an anomalous orbifold can sometimes be resolved by enlarging the orbifold group so that the pullback of the anomaly to the larger orbifold group is trivial. For this procedure to resolve the anomaly, one must specify a set of phases in the larger orbifold, whose form is implicit in the extension construction. There are multiple choices of consistent phases, which give rise to physically distinct resolutions. We apply decomposition, and find that theories with enlarged orbifold groups are equivalent to (disjoint unions of copies of) orbifolds by nonanomalous subgroups of the original orbifold group. In effect, decomposition implies that enlarging the orbifold group is equivalent to making it smaller. We provide a general conjecture for such descriptions, which we check in a number of examples.

  2. Abstract We examine how conformal boundaries encode energy transport coefficients — namely transmission and reflection probabilities — of corresponding conformal interfaces in symmetric orbifold theories. These constitute a large class of irrational theories and are closely related to holographic setups. Our central goal is to compare such coefficients at the orbifold point (a field theory calculation) against their values when the orbifold is highly deformed (a gravity calculation) — an approach akin to past AdS/CFT-guided comparisons of physical quantities at strong versus weak coupling. At the orbifold point, we find that the (weighted-average) transport coefficients are simply averages of coefficients in the underlying seed theory. We then focus on the symmetric orbifold of the 𝕋4sigma model interface CFT dual to type IIB supergravity on the 3d Janus solution. We compare the holographic transmission coefficient, which was found by [1], to that of the orbifold point. We find that the profile of the transmission coefficient substantially increases with the coupling, in contrast to boundary entropy. We also present some related ideas about twisted-sector data encoded by boundary states.

  3. An equidistant X-cactus is a type of rooted, arc-weighted, directed acyclic graph with leaf set X, that is used in biology to represent the evolutionary history of a set X of species. In this paper, we introduce and investigate the space of equidistant X-cactuses. This space contains, as a subset, the space of ultrametric trees on X that was introduced by Gavryushkin and Drummond. We show that equidistant-cactus space is a CAT(0)-metric space which implies, for example, that there are unique geodesic paths between points. As a key step to proving this, we present a combinatorial result concerning ranked rooted X-cactuses. In particular, we show that such graphs can be encoded in terms of a pairwise compatibility condition arising from a poset of collections of pairs of sub- sets of X that satisfy certain set-theoretic properties. As a corollary, we also obtain an encoding of ranked, rooted X-trees in terms of partitions of X, which provides an alternative proof that the space of ultrametric trees on X is CAT(0). We expect that our results will provide the basis for novel ways to perform statistical analyses on collections of equidistant X-cactuses, as well as new directions for defining and understanding spaces of more general, arc-weighted phylogenetic networks.

  4. A bstract We initiate the geometric engineering of 2d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (0 , 1) gauge theories on D1-branes probing singularities. To do so, we introduce a new class of backgrounds obtained as quotients of Calabi-Yau 4-folds by a combination of an anti-holomorphic involution leading to a Spin(7) cone and worldsheet parity. We refer to such constructions as Spin(7) orientifolds . Spin(7) orientifolds explicitly realize the perspective on 2d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (0 , 1) theories as real slices of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (0 , 2) ones. Remarkably, this projection is geometrically realized as Joyce’s construction of Spin(7) manifolds via quotients of Calabi-Yau 4-folds by anti-holomorphic involutions. We illustrate this construction in numerous examples with both orbifold and non-orbifold parent singularities, discuss the role of the choice of vector structure in the orientifold quotient, and study partial resolutions.

Abstract We show that if an expanding Thurston map is the quotient of a torus endomorphism, then it has a parabolic orbifold and is a Lattès-type map.
