Title: Melt/Rise: Climate change and the global interconnectedness of water
From the vantage point of the social sciences, the article provides an overview of the author's concept, "hydrological globalization," as interconnective quality --both physical and social -- that is created through anthropogenic climate change and the transformation of the global cryosphere. The proposition forwarded in the article is that we can "follow the water" from sites of melt (such as The Arctic) to sites where melted ice has, and will, become sea level rise (largely in global coastal cities in the mid-latitudes) in order to compare and contrast strategies and commitments of response and adaptation to environmental change. Through the connectivity of the World Ocean, the essay proposes that novel, unlikely and distant relations are created through the deformation and reformation of the hydrosphere.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Detecting and understanding disturbance is a challenge in ecology that has grown more critical with global environmental change and the emergence of research on social–ecological systems. We identify three areas of research need: developing a flexible framework that incorporates feedback loops between social and ecological systems, anticipating whether a disturbance will change vulnerability to other environmental drivers, and incorporating changes in system sensitivity to disturbance in the face of global changes in environmental drivers. In the present article, we review how discoveries from the US Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network have influenced theoretical paradigms in disturbance ecology, and we refine a framework for describing social–ecological disturbance that addresses these three challenges. By operationalizing this framework for seven LTER sites spanning distinct biomes, we show how disturbance can maintain or alter ecosystem state, drive spatial patterns at landscape scales, influence social–ecological interactions, and cause divergent outcomes depending on other environmental changes.

  2. This article advances geographic scholarship about conservation and protected areas (PAs) through a focuson biocultural geographies. Biocultural geographies derive from relationships between heterogenousIndigenous stewardship practices, biological diversity, and trans-scalar multidimensional social, political, andecological processes. The concept brings together insights from political ecology and biocultural conservationto address the interplay between environmental governance, cultural change, and biodiversity. We drawfrom collaborative, transdisciplinary research with Siona, Siekopai, and Cofan Indigenous communities inthe northern Ecuadorian Amazon, a site of global importance for its biodiversity and cultural heritage. Thisis also a region of rapid and extensive social-ecological change driven by expanding agricultural frontiers,intensifying extractive industries, and new infrastructure development for regional integration. It is from thiscontext that we call for a timely and critical conversation between human–environment geographers and thefield of biocultural conservation, two approaches that have reshaped thinking about PAs and the role ofIndigenous stewardship in an era of accelerating global challenges to social-ecological well-being. Data forour analysis derive from a multiyear study that investigates strategies used to ensure social-ecological well-being in the face of change. Our findings show that Siona, Siekopai, and Cofan stewardship sustains thebiological diversity that characterizes many Amazonian PAs through locally adapted institutions based onknowledge, innovation, and practices they collectively hold. Such stewardship advances self-determinationthat challenges conventional conservation and PA models by centering Indigenous territorial governance.

  3. This article examines intersectional praxis as an approach to institutional transformation, arguing that intersectionality is both a catalyst for and outcome of gender equity efforts in the social sciences and other academic STEM fields. As such, approaching gender equity intersectionally can be understood as a way that theory and practice are co-constitutive in social science and hence an important aspect of transforming academic institutions. Through a case study of the US National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE program for gender equity in STEM, I look at the development of ADVANCE from an effort to support women in scientific fields to becoming a program for institutional transformation grounded in an intersectional understanding of women's inequity in the academic labor force. I ask two related questions in the efforts to address gender inequities in STEM. First, what is the relationship between academic institutions (which are simultaneously sites for the discovery of knowledge and gender inequality) and the National Science foundation, as the premier American academic institutional funding agency? Second, how has this relationship, through those working on ADVANCE, fundamentally shifted the understanding of the social scientific tools and strategies necessary to advance equity for women in academia? In looking at these questions, I argue that, beyond women's representation in social sciences and academia broadly, intersectionality is an important scholarly advance in social science that offers a dialectical tool for change.

  4. ABSTRACT Over the last several decades, scholars have reexamined the importance of spatiality to human life and argued that space produces and is produced by social relationships. This article adopts such a relational understanding of space to examine the production of eco‐archaeological tourist attractions in the eastern Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and beyond. Specifically, this article considers the common practice of declaring areas encompassing archaeological sites as nature parks or wildernesses. Because so many sites are currently located in areas that have been deemed natural, scholars cannot fully understand the contemporary production of archaeological space without examining the historic production of nature and wilderness. Using the Xcaret Eco‐Archaeological Park and the Otoch Ma'ax Yetel Kooh, this article shows that although the creation of archaeological nature parks frequently harms indigenous peoples through processes of spatial colonization and spatial commodification, the production of such spaces can also enable and empower local, marginalized groups.   5. Ecosystem restoration is an important means to address global sustainability challenges. However, scientific and policy discourse often overlooks the social processes that influence the equity and effectiveness of restoration interventions. In the present article, we outline how social processes that are critical to restoration equity and effectiveness can be better incorporated in restoration science and policy. Drawing from existing case studies, we show how projects that align with local people's preferences and are implemented through inclusive governance are more likely to lead to improved social, ecological, and environmental outcomes. To underscore the importance of social considerations in restoration, we overlay existing global restoration priority maps, population, and the Human Development Index (HDI) to show that approximately 1.4 billion people, disproportionately belonging to groups with low HDI, live in areas identified by previous studies as being of high restoration priority. We conclude with five action points for science and policy to promote equity-centered restoration.
