Abstract We propose a new measurement of the ratio of positron-proton to electron-proton elastic scattering at DESY. The purpose is to determine the contributions beyond single-photon exchange, which are essential for the Quantum Electrodynamic (QED) description of the most fundamental process in hadronic physics. By utilizing a 20 cm long liquid hydrogen target in conjunction with the extracted beam from the DESY synchrotron, we can achieve an average luminosity of$$2.12\times 10^{35}$$  cm$$^{-2}\cdot $$ s$$^{-1}$$  ($$\approx 200$$ times the luminosity achieved by OLYMPUS). The proposed two-photon exchange experiment (TPEX) entails a commissioning run at a beam energy of 2 GeV, followed by measurements at 3 GeV, thereby providing new data up to$$Q^2=4.6$$  (GeV/c)$$^2$$ (twice the range of current measurements). We present and discuss the proposed experimental setup, run plan, and expectations.

Abstract Internal waves contain a large amount of energy in the ocean and are an important source of turbulent mixing. Ocean mixing is relevant for climate because it drives vertical transport of water, heat, carbon and other tracers. Understanding the life cycle of internal waves, from generation to dissipation, is therefore important for improving the representation of ocean mixing in climate models. Here, we provide evidence from a regional realistic numerical simulation in the northeastern Pacific that the wind can play an important role in damping internal waves through current feedback. This results in a reduction of 67% of wind power input at near-inertial frequencies in the region of study. Wind-current feedback also provides a net energy sink for internal tides, removing energy at a rate of 0.2 mW/m$$^2$$ on average, corresponding to 8% of the local internal tide generation at the Mendocino ridge. The temporal variability and modal distribution of this energy sink are also investigated.

Abstract We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive$$\rho ^0$$ meson muoproduction at COMPASS using 160 GeV/cpolarised$$ \mu ^{+}$$ and$$ \mu ^{-}$$ beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the kinematic range 5.0 GeV/$$c^2$$ $$< W<$$ 17.0 GeV/$$c^2$$ , 1.0 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ $$< Q^2<$$ 10.0 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ and 0.01 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ $$< p_{\textrm{T}}^2<$$ 0.5 (GeV/c)$$^2$$ . Here,Wdenotes the mass of the final hadronic system,$$Q^2$$ the virtuality of the exchanged photon, and$$p_{\textrm{T}}$$ the transverse momentum of the$$\rho ^0$$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($$\gamma ^*_T \rightarrow V^{ }_L$$ ) indicate a violation ofs-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a dominant contribution of natural-parity-exchange transitions and a very small contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange transitions, which is compatible with zero within experimental uncertainties. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow one to evaluate in a model-dependent way the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive$$\rho ^0$$ production.more » « less

            Abstract The elliptic flow$$(v_2)$$ of$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$ mesons from beauty-hadron decays (non-prompt$${\textrm{D}}^{0})$$ was measured in midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$ mesons were reconstructed at midrapidity$$(|y|<0.8)$$ from their hadronic decay$$\mathrm {D^0 \rightarrow K^-\uppi ^+}$$ , in the transverse momentum interval$$2< p_{\textrm{T}} < 12$$ GeV/c. The result indicates a positive$$v_2$$ for non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$ mesons with a significance of 2.7$$\sigma $$ . The non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$ -meson$$v_2$$ is lower than that of prompt non-strange D mesons with 3.2$$\sigma $$ significance in$$2< p_\textrm{T} < 8~\textrm{GeV}/c$$ , and compatible with the$$v_2$$ of beauty-decay electrons. Theoretical calculations of beauty-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding medium describe the measurement within uncertainties.more » « less

Abstract We propose a new observable for the measurement of the forward–backward asymmetry$$(A_{FB})$$ in Drell–Yan lepton production. At hadron colliders, the$$A_{FB}$$ distribution is sensitive to both the electroweak (EW) fundamental parameter$$\sin ^{2} \theta _{W}$$ , the weak mixing angle, and the parton distribution functions (PDFs). Hence, the determination of$$\sin ^{2} \theta _{W}$$ and the updating of PDFs by directly using the same$$A_{FB}$$ spectrum are strongly correlated. This correlation would introduce large bias or uncertainty into both precise measurements of EW and PDF sectors. In this article, we show that the sensitivity of$$A_{FB}$$ on$$\sin ^{2} \theta _{W}$$ is dominated by its average value around theZpole region, while the shape (or gradient) of the$$A_{FB}$$ spectrum is insensitive to$$\sin ^{2} \theta _{W}$$ and contains important information on the PDF modeling. Accordingly, a new observable related to the gradient of the spectrum is introduced, and demonstrated to be able to significantly reduce the potential bias on the determination of$$\sin ^{2} \theta _{W}$$ when updating the PDFs using the same$$A_{FB}$$ data.more » « less

Abstract Low-lying states in$$^{54}$$ Cr have been investigated via the$$\alpha $$ -transfer reaction$$^{50}$$ Ti($$^{7}$$ Li,t) at a bombarding energy of 20 MeV. The exclusive$$\alpha $$ -transfer channel is separated from other reaction channels through the appropriate energy gate on the complementary particle, triton. Levels of$$^{54}$$ Cr populated exclusively by the$$\alpha $$ -transfer process could be identified up to$$\approx $$ 5 MeV excitation energy and angular momentum up to$$(8)^{+}$$ , by identifying the corresponding known$$\gamma $$ -rays. These include multiple low-lying non-yrast 2$$^+$$ and 4$$^+$$ states, which would otherwise be unfavorable via fusion evaporation reactions. The feeding-subtracted$$\gamma $$ -ray yields have been extracted to estimate the population of various excited states through the transfer process. The measured integrated transfer cross sections for all the observed yrast and non-yrast states are compared with Coupled Channels calculations usingfrescoto extract the$$\alpha $$ +$$^{50}$$ Ti core spectroscopic factors. For the yrast states, a higher$$\alpha $$ +core overlap is seen for the$$2^+$$ and$$4^+$$ states, while it is seen to be less favorable for the$$6^+$$ and$$(8)^+$$ states when$$\alpha $$ -transfer is considered to occur predominantly as a direct one-step process to the$$^{50}$$ Ti core ground state. The yrast$$2^+$$ , and$$4^+$$ states are predominantly populated by single-step transfer, while for the states with spin$$\ge $$ 5, the possibility of core excitation followed by$$\alpha $$ -transfer shows a larger$$\alpha $$ -core overlap. For the non-yrast$$0^+$$ ,$$2^+$$ , and$$4^+$$ states, single-step transfer shows moderate to small$$\alpha $$ -core overlap. No higher spin non-yrast states are observed.more » « less
