Abstract External and internal convertible (EIC) form-based motion control is one of the effective designs of simultaneous trajectory tracking and balance for underactuated balance robots. Under certain conditions, the EIC-based control design is shown to lead to uncontrolled robot motion. To overcome this issue, we present a Gaussian process (GP)-based data-driven learning control for underactuated balance robots with the EIC modeling structure. Two GP-based learning controllers are presented by using the EIC property. The partial EIC (PEIC)-based control design partitions the robotic dynamics into a fully actuated subsystem and a reduced-order underactuated subsystem. The null-space EIC (NEIC)-based control compensates for the uncontrolled motion in a subspace, while the other closed-loop dynamics are not affected. Under the PEIC- and NEIC-based, the tracking and balance tasks are guaranteed, and convergence rate and bounded errors are achieved without causing any uncontrolled motion by the original EIC-based control. We validate the results and demonstrate the GP-based learning control design using two inverted pendulum platforms.

Gyroscopic Balancer-Enhanced Motion Control of an Autonomous Bikebot
Abstract Bikebot (i.e., bicycle-based robot) is a class of underactuated balance robotic systems that require simultaneous trajectory tracking and balance control tasks. We present a tracking and balance control design of an autonomous bikebot. The external-internal convertible structure of the bikebot dynamics is used to design a causal feedback control to achieve both the tracking and balance tasks. A balance equilibrium manifold is used to define and capture the platform balance profiles and coupled interaction with the trajectory tracking performance. To achieve fully autonomous navigation, a gyrobalancer actuation is integrated with the steering and velocity control for stationary platform balance and stationary-moving switching. Stability and convergence analyses are presented to guarantee the control performance. Extensive experiments are presented to validate and demonstrate the autonomous control design. We also compare the autonomous control performance with human riding experiments and similar action strategies are found between them.

We consider the problem of trajectory planning for optimal relative orbit determination in the cislunar environment. The recent interest in cislunar space has created a need to develop autonomous tracking technologies that can maintain situational awareness of this dynamically complex regime. Optical sensors provide an ideal observation platform because of their low cost and versatility in tracking both cooperative and non-cooperative space objects. The estimation performance of an optical observer can be significantly enhanced through manuevering. This work develops a trajectory planning tool, compatible with low-thrust propulsion, for tracking one or multiple targets operating in proximity to the observer. We formulate an objective function that is a convex combination of the mutual information between target states and measurements, and the low-thrust control effort. The subsequent optimal control problem is solved via direct collocation using the successive convexification algorithm, which, we argue, is well suited for a potential onboard trajectory planning application. We demonstrate the tool for several relevant scenarios with one and multiple targets operating around periodic orbits in the circular restricted three-body problem. A sequential estimator's performance is evaluated using the Cramer-Rao lower bound and, compared to a purely passive observer, we show that optimizing the observer's trajectory can decrease this bound by up to several orders of magnitude within a planning window. This investigation provides an initial proof-of-concept to future onboard planning technologies for relative tracking in the cislunar domain.more » « less

This work proposes a two-degree of freedom (2DOF) controller for motion tracking of nanopositioning devices, such as piezoelectric actuators (PEAs), with a broad bandwidth and high precision. The proposed 2DOF controller consists of an inversion feedforward controller and a real-time feedback controller. The feedforward controller, a sequence-to-sequence LSTM-based inversion model (invLSTMs2s), is used to compensate for the nonlinearity of the PEA, especially at high frequencies, and is collaboratively integrated with a linear MPC feedback controller, which ensures the PEA position tracking performance at low frequencies. Therefore, the proposed 2DOF controller, namely, invLSTMs2s+MPC, is able to achieve high precision over a broad bandwidth. To validate the proposed controller, the uncertainty of invLSTMs2s is checked such that the integration of an inversion model-based feedforward controller has a positive impact on the trajectory tracking performance compared to feedback control only. Experimental validation on a commercial PEA and comparison with existing approaches demonstrate that high tracking accuracies can be achieved by invLSTMs2s+MPC for various reference trajectories. Moreover, invLSTMs2s+MPC is further demonstrated on a multi-dimensional PEA platform for simultaneous multi-direction positioning control.more » « less
