There has been an extensive amount of work developing reduced-order models (ROMs) for bladed disks using single-sector models and a cyclic analysis. Several ROMs currently exist to accurately model a bladed disk with under-platform dampers. To better predict the complex nonlinear response of a system with under-platform dampers, this work demonstrates how two linear models can determine bounds for the nonlinear response. The two cases explored are where the under-platform damper is completely stuck and also where the damper slides without friction. This work utilizes the component mode mistuning method to model small mistuning and a parametric ROM method to capture changes in properties due to rotational speed effects. Previously, these ROM methodologies have modeled freestanding bladed disk systems. To evaluate the ROM in predicting the bounds, blade tip amplitudes from the models are compared with high-speed rotating experiments conducted in a large, evacuated vacuum tank. The experimental data were collected during testing using strain gauges and laser blade tip timing probes. The blade amplitudes of the tip timing data, strain gauge data, and computational simulations are compared to determine the effectiveness of the simplified linear analysis in bounding the nonlinear response of the physical system.

Damping and Stiffness Mistuning Effects in a Bladed Disk With Varied Disk Coupling
Abstract Component mode mistuning (CMM) is a well-known, well documented reduced order modeling technique that effectively models small variations in blade-to-blade stiffness for bladed disks. In practice, bladed disks always have variations, referred to as mistuning, and are a focus of a large amount of research. One element that is commonly ignored from small mistuning implementations is the variation within the blade-to-blade damping values. This work seeks to better understand the effects of damping mistuning by utilizing both structural and proportional damping formulations. This work builds from previous work that implemented structural damping mistuning reduced order models formulated based on CMM. A similar derivation was used to create reduced order models with a proportional damping formulation. The damping and stiffness mistuning values investigated in this study were derived using measured blade natural frequencies and damping ratios from high-speed rotating experiments on freestanding blades. The two separate damping formulations that are presented give very similar results, enabling the user to select their preferred method for a given application. A key parameter investigated in this work is the significance of blade-to-blade coupling. The blade-to-blade coupling study investigates how the level of coupling impacts damping mistuning effects versus applying average damping to the bladed disk model. Also, the interaction of stiffness and damping mistuning is studied. Monte Carlo simulations were carried out to determine amplification factors, or the ratio of mistuned blade responses to tuned blade responses, for various mistuning levels and patterns.

Graphene oxide (GO) films have a great potential for aerospace, electronics, and renewable energy applications due to their low cost and unique properties. For structural applications, they can achieve an exceptional combination of damping and stiffness. This study investigates the effect of packing density, reduction, and water removal on stiffness and damping of graphene oxide films. GO sheets dispersed in water are passed through a filter and deposited on a removable substrate. Through variations of the film fabrication process, films of both GO and reduced GO (rGO) are produced with varying levels of packing. Heat treatment is also used to remove the water in half of the films. The degree of packing is assessed through film density calculations. Microscopy as well as Raman and X-ray spectroscopy are used to measure the degree of packing while Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) is used to quantity mechanical damping and storage modulus of specimens in tension. Correlating mechanical properties to structure of films revealed new understanding of damping and stress transfer mechanisms in these materials. Optimal structures resulted in superior combinations of stiffness (18 GPa) and damping (0.14), potentially paving the way for using GO based films in advanced structural applications.more » « less

Abstract Flapping wings deform under both aerodynamic and inertial forces. However, many flapping wing fluid–structure interaction (FSI) models require significant computational resources which limit their effectiveness for high-dimensional parametric studies. Here, we present a simple bilaterally coupled FSI model for a wing subject to single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) flapping. The model is reduced-order and can be solved several orders of magnitude faster than direct computational methods. To verify the model experimentally, we construct a SDOF rotation stage and measure basal strain of a flapping wing in-air and in-vacuum. Overall, the derived model estimates wing strain with good accuracy. In-vacuum, the wing has a large 3ω response when flapping at approximately one-third of its natural frequency due to a superharmonic resonance, where the superharmonic occurs due to the interaction of inertial forces and time-varying centrifugal softening. In-air, this 3ω response is attenuated significantly as a result of aerodynamic damping, whereas the primary ω response is increased due to aerodynamic loading. These results highlight the importance of (1) bilateral coupling between the fluid and structure, since unilaterally coupled approaches do not adequately describe deformation-induced aerodynamic damping and (2) time-varying stiffness, which generates superharmonics of the flapping frequency in the wing’s dynamic response. The simple SDOF model and experimental study presented in this work demonstrate the potential for a reduced-order FSI model that considers both bilateral fluid–structure coupling and realistic multi-degrees-of-freedom flapping kinematics moving forward.more » « less

A novel structural damage detection methodology that relies on the detectability of the changes in acoustic transmissibility across boundaries of structural cavities is investigated. The approach focuses on active damage detection by leveraging the acoustic pressure responses measured external to structural cavities while exposed to internal acoustic excitations. The active damage detection concept is first demonstrated on a 4 m wind turbine blade using acoustic beamforming techniques to confirm that the acoustic energy transmitted through a damaged surface increases local to the damage compared to an undamaged surface. The concept is further verified, only considering acoustic pressure responses measured from limited microphones positioned at various distances from a ~46 m wind turbine blade. A comprehensive testing campaign is developed and executed on the utility-scale blade considering various damage types, severity levels, and locations. The data are analyzed using a combination of spectral analysis and statistics-based metrics to detect and track the progression of damage as well as identify trends across the test variables. Overall, large increases in the power spectral density were observed from the pressure responses measured external to the structure in most cases. The spectral differences increased as the damage became more severe and damage as small as 5.1 cm in length was easily detected from multiple sensors up to 17.1 m from the damage location. Damage was easily detected when implemented before the mid-length of the blade using simple signal processing algorithms and preliminary test configurations. The data acquired in this work serve as a preliminary investigation into the capability of the approach on complex structures and paves the path for future research into the signal processing techniques and test configurations that will enhance the performance of the active acoustic damage detection approach.more » « less

Abstract Millimeter and submillimeter observations of continuum linear dust polarization provide insight into dust grain growth in protoplanetary disks, which are the progenitors of planetary systems. We present the results of the first survey of dust polarization in protoplanetary disks at 870μm and 3 mm. We find that protoplanetary disks in the same molecular cloud at similar evolutionary stages can exhibit different correlations between observing wavelength and polarization morphology and fraction. We explore possible origins for these differences in polarization, including differences in dust populations and protostar properties. For RY Tau and MWC 480, which are consistent with scattering at both wavelengths, we present models of the scattering polarization from several dust grain size distributions. These models aim to reproduce two features of the observational results for these disks: (1) both disks have an observable degree of polarization at both wavelengths; and (2) the polarization fraction is higher at 3 mm than at 870μm in the centers of the disks. For both disks, these features can be reproduced by a power-law distribution of spherical dust grains with a maximum radius of 200μm and high optical depth. In MWC 480, we can also reproduce features (1) and (2) with a model containing large grains (amax= 490μm) near the disk midplane and small grains (amax= 140μm) above and below the midplane.more » « less
