Title: First Measurement of the |t| Dependence of Incoherent J/ψ Photonuclear Production

The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production ofJ/ψvector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam|t|variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity,|y|<0.8, using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair ofsNN=5.02TeV. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-xrange(0.31.4)×103. Cross sections are given in five|t|intervals in the range0.04<|t|<1GeV2and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a|t|dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data.

  1. The production of theψ(2S)charmonium state was measured with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions atsNN=5.02TeV, in the dimuon decay channel. A significant signal was observed for the first time at LHC energies down to zero transverse momentum, at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4). The measurement of the ratio of the inclusive production cross sections of theψ(2S)andJ/ψresonances is reported as a function of the centrality of the collisions and of transverse momentum, in the regionpT<12GeV/c. The results are compared with the corresponding measurements inppcollisions, by forming the double ratio[σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ]PbPb/[σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ]pp. It is found that in Pb-Pb collisions theψ(2S)is suppressed by a factor of2with respect to theJ/ψ. Theψ(2S)nuclear modification factorRAAwas also obtained as a function of both centrality andpT. The results show that theψ(2S)resonance yield is strongly suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, by a factor of up to3with respect topp. Comparisons of cross section ratios with previous Super Proton Synchrotron findings by the NA50 experiment and ofRAAwith higher-pTresults at LHC energy are also reported. These results and the corresponding comparisons with calculations of transport and statistical models address questions on the presence and properties of charmonium states in the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions at the LHC.

Energy correlators that describe energy-weighted distances between two or three particles in a hadronic jet are measured using an event sample ofs=13TeVproton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of36.3fb1. The measured distributions are consistent with the trends in the simulation that reveal two key features of the strong interaction: confinement and asymptotic freedom. By comparing the ratio of the measured three- and two-particle energy correlator distributions with theoretical calculations that resum collinear emissions at approximate next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy matched to a next-to-leading-order calculation, the strong coupling is determined at theZboson mass:αS(mZ)=0.12290.0050+0.0040, the most preciseαS(mZ)value obtained using jet substructure observables.

Measurements of<math display='inline'><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>photoproduction probe the couplings between the<math display='inline'><mi>ϕ</mi><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>1020</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></math>and charged kaons with photons and nuclear targets. The kaon-proton scattering occurs at energies far above those available elsewhere. We present the first measurement of coherent photoproduction of<math display='inline'><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>pairs on lead ions in ultraperipheral collisions using the ALICE detector, including the first investigation of direct<math display='inline'><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>production. There is significant<math display='inline'><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>production at low transverse momentum, consistent with coherent photoproduction on lead targets. In the mass range<math display='inline'><mrow><mn>1.1</mn><mo><</mo><msub><mrow><mi>M</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>K</mi><mi>K</mi></mrow></msub><mo><</mo><mn>1.4</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>GeV</mi><mo>/</mo><msup><mrow><mi>c</mi></mrow><mrow><mn>2</mn></mrow></msup></mrow></math>above the<math display='inline'><mi>ϕ</mi><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>1020</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></math>resonance, for rapidity<math display='inline'><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><msub><mrow><mi>y</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>K</mi><mi>K</mi></mrow></msub><mo stretchy='false'>|</mo><mo><</mo><mn>0.8</mn></mrow></math>and<math display='inline'><msub><mi>p</mi><mrow><mi>T</mi><mo>,</mo><mi>K</mi><mi>K</mi></mrow></msub><mo><</mo><mn>0.1</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>GeV</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>c</mi></math>, the measured coherent photoproduction cross section is<math display='inline'><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>d</mi><mi>σ</mi><mo>/</mo><mi mathvariant='normal'>d</mi><mi>y</mi><mo>=</mo><mn>3.37</mn><mo>±</mo><mn>0.61</mn><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mtext>stat</mtext><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo><mo>±</mo><mn>0.15</mn><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mi>syst</mi><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>mb</mi></mrow></math>. The center-of-mass energy per nucleon of the photon-nucleus (Pb) system<math display='inline'><mrow><msub><mrow><mi>W</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>γ</mi><mi>Pb</mi><mo>,</mo><mi>n</mi></mrow></msub></mrow></math>ranges from 33 to 188 GeV, far higher than previous measurements on heavy-nucleus targets. The cross section is larger than expected for<math display='inline'><mi>ϕ</mi><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>1020</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></math>photoproduction alone. The mass spectrum is fit to a cocktail consisting of<math display='inline'><mi>ϕ</mi><mo stretchy='false'>(</mo><mn>1020</mn><mo stretchy='false'>)</mo></math>decays, direct<math display='inline'><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>+</mo></msup><msup><mi>K</mi><mo>−</mo></msup></math>photoproduction, and interference between the two. In this work the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is probed, by presenting the first measurement of the longitudinal jet momentum fraction carried by<math display='inline'><mrow><msubsup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>Λ</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>c</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>+</mo></mrow></msubsup></mrow></math>baryons,<math display='inline'><mrow><msubsup><mrow><mi>z</mi></mrow><mrow><mo stretchy='false'>∥</mo></mrow><mrow><mi>ch</mi></mrow></msubsup></mrow></math>, in hadronic collisions. The results are obtained in proton-proton (<math display='inline'><mi>p</mi><mi>p</mi></math>) collisions at<math display='inline'><msqrt><mi>s</mi></msqrt><mo>=</mo><mn>13</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>TeV</mi></math>at the LHC, with<math display='inline'><mrow><msubsup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>Λ</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>c</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>+</mo></mrow></msubsup></mrow></math>baryons and charged (track-based) jets reconstructed in the transverse momentum intervals of<math display='inline'><mrow><mn>3</mn><mo>≤</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>p</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>T</mi></mrow><mrow><msubsup><mrow><mi mathvariant='normal'>Λ</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>c</mi></mrow><mrow><mo>+</mo></mrow></msubsup></mrow></msubsup><mo><</mo><mn>15</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>GeV</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>c</mi></mrow></math>and<math display='inline'><mrow><mn>7</mn><mo>≤</mo><msubsup><mrow><mi>p</mi></mrow><mrow><mi>T</mi></mrow><mrow><mtext>jet ch</mtext></mrow></msubsup><mo><</mo><mn>15</mn><mtext> </mtext><mtext> </mtext><mi>GeV</mi><mo>/</mo><mi>c</mi></mrow></math>, respectively. The<math display='inline'><msubsup><mi>z</mi><mo stretchy='false'>∥</mo><mi>ch</mi></msubsup></math>distribution is compared to a measurement of<math display='inline'><msup><mi mathvariant='normal'>D</mi><mn>0</mn></msup></math>-tagged charged jets in<math display='inline'><mi>p</mi><mi>p</mi></math>collisions as well as to 8 simulations. The data hints that the fragmentation of charm quarks into charm baryons is softer with respect to charm mesons, in the measured kinematic interval, as predicted by hadronization models which include The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity,|y|<0.8, using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair ofsNN=5.02  TeV. This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken-xrange(0.3–1.4)×10−3. Cross sections are given in five|t|intervals in the range0.04<|t|<1  GeV2and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a|t|dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data.
