This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more kilometer--scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. The key sections of this report present the physics case and technical challenges, together with a comprehensive overview of the discussions at the workshop together with the main conclusions.

Public Interest Technology for Innovation in Global Development: Recommendations for Launching PIT Projects
This paper serves as an Introduction to the Public Interest Technology (PIT) for Innovation in Global Development Special Issue, based on a workshop of the same title held in September 2023. The paper’s contribution is in proposing recommendations and practical guidance to aid in launching PIT projects. We begin by situating the Special Issue in evolving definitions of PIT in Section II , followed by an overview of the PIT ecosystem in Section III to offer a succinct account of the current state of PIT scholarship. The corresponding links to the innovation in global development context are subsequently described in Section IV , in keeping with the theme of the workshop. These links relate to an overview of adjacent fields and concepts; an illustrative example in the information technology for development (ICT4D) field; the identification of gaps in current PIT scholarship; and the preliminary questions that require attention. Next, Section V presents workshop outcomes, in the form of a general overview of the event; the identification of prevalent themes emerging from and / or are reinforced in the workshop; and a summary of Special Issue papers. The workshop is used as an interdisciplinary catalyst for the explication of more recent PIT developments. These developments are encapsulated in ten recommendations for launching PIT projects in Section VI , intended to direct PIT project managers or lead investigators prior to project launch or during the initial stages of a project.

The Belmont Forum and the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) organized an online training workshop on transdisciplinary (TD) approaches at the Sustainability, Research, and Innovation Congress (SRI) in 2022. The IAI is an intergovernmental organization that brings together 19 countries from the Americas to support adaptation to the world’s changing environment. The Belmont Forum is a consortium of major funders and international science councils to promote knowledge about sustainability science. The workshop aimed to create a safe environment for participants to share their impressions of and experiences about transdisciplinary research, using the Americas (IAI mandate) as a launching point for TD approaches globally. The workshop consisted of two online sessions: Transdisciplinary Approach 101 and Transdisciplinary Case Studies. The objectives of the current workshop report are: 1) to identify the key takeaways regarding common challenges and opportunities for transdisciplinary practice among workshop participants’ experiences, upon which to base recommendations for best practices, e.g., managing power imbalances, conflicting priorities and timeframes, enhancing communication and consolidating contextual awareness. 2) to offer insights to build better strategies for “train the trainers'' processes around transdisciplinarity, especially in congresses and short-term events, including using an experience-based approach, offering specific tools and increasing the participation of non-academic partners. This report encourages the implementation of other training processes by experienced transdisciplinary researchers, practitioners, and funders, in order to build capacities for collaborative approaches in diverse scientific communities.more » « less

Synopsis Identifying individual animals is crucial for many biological investigations. In response to some of the limitations of current identification methods, new automated computer vision approaches have emerged with strong performance. Here, we review current advances of computer vision identification techniques to provide both computer scientists and biologists with an overview of the available tools and discuss their applications. We conclude by offering recommendations for starting an animal identification project, illustrate current limitations, and propose how they might be addressed in the future.more » « less

Accurate estimates of biomass burning (BB) emissions are of great importance worldwide due to the impacts of these emissions on human health, ecosystems, air quality, and climate. Atmospheric modeling efforts to represent these impacts require BB emissions as a key input. This paper is presented by the Biomass Burning Uncertainty: Reactions, Emissions and Dynamics (BBURNED) activity of the International Global Atmospheric Chemistry project and largely based on a workshop held in November 2023. The paper reviews 9 of the BB emissions datasets widely used by the atmospheric chemistry community, all of which rely heavily on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite observations of fires scheduled to be discontinued at the end of 2025. In this time of transition away from MODIS to new fire observations, such as those from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) satellite instruments, we summarize the contemporary status of BB emissions estimation and provide recommendations on future developments. Development of global BB emissions datasets depends on vegetation datasets, emission factors, and assumptions of fire persistence and phase, all of which are highly uncertain with high degrees of variability and complexity and are continually evolving areas of research. As a result, BB emissions datasets can have differences on the order of factor 2–3, and no single dataset stands out as the best for all regions, species, and times. We summarize the methodologies and differences between BB emissions datasets. The workshop identified 5 key recommendations for future research directions for estimating BB emissions and quantifying the associated uncertainties: development and uptake of satellite burned area products from VIIRS and other instruments; mapping of fine scale heterogeneity in fuel type and condition; identification of spurious signal detections and information gaps in satellite fire radiative power products; regional modeling studies and comparison against existing datasets; and representation of the diurnal cycle and plume rise in BB emissions.more » « less
