Title: Positioning Universities to Recruit and Train STEM Teachers Who Stay in Rural Schools: A Collaborative Approach
We discuss establishing a collaborative research project to better understand and support prospective STEM teachers going into rural schools. We particularly focus on the collaborative infrastructure required to sustain this research and all the result of this research to have maximal impact.  more » « less

  1. We examined how Idea Wall, a collaboration spatially manipulable interactive note tool, supports collaborative scientific reasoning among students. Through a design-based research approach, the study also aims to identify potential improvements to the tool that can better support collaborative interactions. The Idea Wall has the ability to facilitate spatial manipulation and interactive note-taking supported student engagement and collaboration. This paper contributes to the growing body of research on the use of interactive tools to enhance scientific reasoning skills in collaborative learning environments. By researching the affordances and challenges of the tool, this study provides valuable insights into the design considerations and potential improvements of such tools in building new norms of collaborative discussion for a knowledge community.

  2. There are newer efforts from funding organizations and agencies incentivizing collaborative research. I refer to collaborative research as research that requires the engagement from more than one institution, community, and/or economic sector, for example: participatory research, reciprocal research, convergence science, research-practice partnerships, university-industry partnerships, cross-disciplinary research and more. Compared to more traditional research, the formation of collaborative research ideas, roles of collaborators, and budgets alone take longer to develop before they are ready to present to funders. And if funded, research outcomes are harder to control and predict and the level of communication required across collaborators is higher in terms of keeping the vision forward (e.g., goals, roles, timeline) and in terms of effective research administration (e.g., budgeting, ethical reviews, documentation, compliance).Then, to broaden perspectives and participation in research, newer efforts also encourage non-traditional researchers to engage or lead collaborative research. I refer to a non-traditional researcher as someone who earned a PhD but for whom research is not a part of their current role, and who is at an institution that does not have research enterprise infrastructure to support them in accessing research funding easily or at all (e.g., a grants office). In this paper, I discuss a case study of collaborative research I lead for eight years, involving K-12 teachers, community college faculty, university researchers, and non-academic organizations in terms of the planning and coordination required compared to traditional research. I will also provide suggestions to lower barriers to access funding for and deliver on this type of research.

    With the support of digital learning platforms, synchronous and collaborative learning has become a prominent learning paradigm in mathematics education. Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL) has emerged as a valuable tool for enhancing mathematical discourse, problem solving, and ultimately learning outcomes. This paper presents an innovative examination of Graspable Math (GM), a dynamic mathematic notation and learning online platform, to enable synchronous, collaborative learning between pairs of students. Through analyzing students' online log data, we adopt a data-driven method to better understand the intricate dynamics of collaborative learning in mathematics as it happens. Specifically, we apply frequency distributions, cluster analysis to present students' dynamic interaction patterns and identify distinctive profiles of collaboration. Our findings reveal several collaboration profiles that emerge through these analyses. This research not only bridges the gap in current CSCL tools for mathematics, but also provides empirical insights into the effective design and implementation of such tools. The insights gained from this research offer implications for the design of digital learning tools that support effective and engaging collaborative learning experiences.

This collaborative "essay of essays" begins with an introduction by a professor of human centered design and engineering who has been working concurrently with PhD students to study collaborative system design. We undertake widely scoped qualitative research studies, that we categorize as "extended studies," that cut across units of analysis, organizations, or time. Our research explores how people create new ways to enact systems that support the knowledge work of different stakeholders. In response to an anchor essay, the students have written reflections about the multifaceted experience of doing extended studies. Many of these studies began by focusing on a particular project to develop a particular system or information infrastructure, and associated standards. Over time the studies came to center on collaborative dynamics per se, and also how collaborative dynamics shifted the scope and functionality of products, sometimes also affecting programmatic and infrastructural level changes.

  5. Remote scientific collaborations have been pivotal in generating scientific discoveries and breakthroughs that accelerate research in many fields. Emerging VR applications for remote work, which utilize commercially available head-mounted displays (HMDs), offer the promise to enhance collaboration, through spatial and embodied experiences. However, there is little evidence on how professionals in general, and scientists in particular, could use existing commercial VR applications to support their cognitive and creative collaborative processes while exploring real-world data as part of day-to-day collaborative work. In this paper, we present findings from an empirical study with 14 coral reef scientists, examining how they chose to utilize available resources in existing virtual environments for their ongoing data-driven collaborative research. We shed light on scientists’ data organization practices, identify affordances unique to VR for supporting cognition in a collaborative setting, and highlight design requirements for supporting cognitive and creative collaboration processes in future tools.
