Title: Exploring Jahn-Teller distortions: a local vibrational mode perspective
AbstractThe characterization of normal mode (CNM) procedure coupled with an adiabatic connection scheme (ACS) between local and normal vibrational modes, both being a part of the Local Vibrational Mode theory developed in our group, can identify spectral changes as structural fingerprints that monitor symmetry alterations, such as those caused by Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions. Employing the PBE0/Def2-TZVP level of theory, we investigated in this proof-of-concept study the hexaaquachromium cation case,$$\mathrm {[Cr{(OH_2)}_6]^{3+}}$$ [ Cr ( OH 2 ) 6 ] 3 + /$$\mathrm {[Cr{(OH_2)}_6]^{2+}}$$ [ Cr ( OH 2 ) 6 ] 2 + , as a commonly known example for a JT distortion, followed by the more difficult ferrous and ferric hexacyanide anion case,$$\mathrm {[Fe{(CN)}_6]^{4-}}$$ [ Fe ( CN ) 6 ] 4 - /$$\mathrm {[Fe{(CN)}_6]^{3-}}$$ [ Fe ( CN ) 6 ] 3 - . We found that in both cases CNM of the characteristic normal vibrational modes reflects delocalization consistent with high symmetry and ACS confirms symmetry breaking, as evidenced by the separation of axial and equatorial group frequencies. As underlined by the Cremer-Kraka criterion for covalent bonding, from$$\mathrm {[Cr{(OH_2)}_6]^{3+}}$$ [ Cr ( OH 2 ) 6 ] 3 + to$$\mathrm {[Cr{(OH_2)}_6]^{2+}}$$ [ Cr ( OH 2 ) 6 ] 2 + there is an increase in axial covalency whereas the equatorial bonds shift toward electrostatic character. From$$\mathrm {[Fe{(CN)}_6]^{4-}}$$ [ Fe ( CN ) 6 ] 4 - to$$\mathrm {[Fe{(CN)}_6]^{3-}}$$ [ Fe ( CN ) 6 ] 3 - we observed an increase in covalency without altering the bond nature. Distinct$$\pi $$ π back-donation disparity could be confirmed by comparison with the isolated CN$$^-$$ - system. In summary, our study positions the CNM/ACS protocol as a robust tool for investigating less-explored JT distortions, paving the way for future applications. 1. Measurements are presented of the cross-section for the central exclusive production ofJ/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^- J / ψ μ + μ and\psi(2S)\to\mu^+\mu^- ψ ( 2 S ) μ + μ processes in proton-proton collisions at\sqrt{s} = 13 \ \mathrm{TeV} s = 13 T e V with 2016–2018 data. They are performed by requiring both muons to be in the LHCb acceptance (with pseudorapidity2<\eta_{\mu^±} < 4.5 2 < η μ ± < 4.5 ) and mesons in the rapidity range2.0 < y < 4.5 2.0 < y < 4.5 . The integrated cross-section results are\sigma_{J/\psi\to\mu^+\mu^-}(2.0 σ J / ψ μ + μ ( 2.0 < y J / ψ < 4.5 , 2.0 < η μ ± < 4.5 ) = 400 ± 2 ± 5 ± 12 p b , σ ψ ( 2 S ) μ + μ ( 2.0 < y ψ ( 2 S ) < 4.5 , 2.0 < η μ ± < 4.5 ) = 9.40 ± 0.15 ± 0.13 ± 0.27 p b , where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic and due to the luminosity determination. In addition, a measurement of the ratio of\psi(2S) ψ ( 2 S ) andJ/\psi J / ψ cross-sections, at an average photon-proton centre-of-mass energy of1\ \mathrm{TeV} 1 T e V , is performed, giving$ = 0.1763 ± 0.0029 ± 0.0008 ± 0.0039,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the knowledge of the involved branching fractions. For the first time, the dependence of theJ/\psi$ J / ψ and\psi(2S) ψ ( 2 S ) cross-sections on the total transverse momentum transfer is determined inpp p p collisions and is found consistent with the behaviour observed in electron-proton collisions.

  2. It has recently been understood that the complete global symmetry of finite group topological gauge theories contains the structure of a higher-group. Here we study the higher-group structure in (3+1)D\mathbb{Z}_2 2 gauge theory with an emergent fermion, and point out that pumping chiralp+ip p + i p topological states gives rise to a\mathbb{Z}_{8} 8 0-form symmetry with mixed gravitational anomaly. This ordinary symmetry mixes with the other higher symmetries to form a 3-group structure, which we examine in detail. We then show that in the context of stabilizer quantum codes, one can obtain logical CCZ and CS gates by placing the code on a discretization ofT^3 T 3 (3-torus) andT^2 \rtimes_{C_2} S^1 T 2 C 2 S 1 (2-torus bundle over the circle) respectively, and pumpingp+ip p + i p states. Our considerations also imply the possibility of a logicalT T gate by placing the code on\mathbb{RP}^3 3 and pumping ap+ip p + i p topological state.

  3. Abstract LetXbe ann-element point set in thek-dimensional unit cube$$[0,1]^k$$ [ 0 , 1 ] k where$$k \ge 2$$ k 2 . According to an old result of Bollobás and Meir (Oper Res Lett 11:19–21, 1992) , there exists a cycle (tour)$$x_1, x_2, \ldots , x_n$$ x 1 , x 2 , , x n through thenpoints, such that$$\left( \sum _{i=1}^n |x_i - x_{i+1}|^k \right) ^{1/k} \le c_k$$ i = 1 n | x i - x i + 1 | k 1 / k c k , where$$|x-y|$$ | x - y | is the Euclidean distance betweenxandy, and$$c_k$$ c k is an absolute constant that depends only onk, where$$x_{n+1} \equiv x_1$$ x n + 1 x 1 . From the other direction, for every$$k \ge 2$$ k 2 and$$n \ge 2$$ n 2 , there existnpoints in$$[0,1]^k$$ [ 0 , 1 ] k , such that their shortest tour satisfies$$\left( \sum _{i=1}^n |x_i - x_{i+1}|^k \right) ^{1/k} = 2^{1/k} \cdot \sqrt{k}$$ i = 1 n | x i - x i + 1 | k 1 / k = 2 1 / k · k . For the plane, the best constant is$$c_2=2$$ c 2 = 2 and this is the only exact value known. Bollobás and Meir showed that one can take$$c_k = 9 \left( \frac{2}{3} \right) ^{1/k} \cdot \sqrt{k}$$ c k = 9 2 3 1 / k · k for every$$k \ge 3$$ k 3 and conjectured that the best constant is$$c_k = 2^{1/k} \cdot \sqrt{k}$$ c k = 2 1 / k · k , for every$$k \ge 2$$ k 2 . Here we significantly improve the upper bound and show that one can take$$c_k = 3 \sqrt{5} \left( \frac{2}{3} \right) ^{1/k} \cdot \sqrt{k}$$ c k = 3 5 2 3 1 / k · k or$$c_k = 2.91 \sqrt{k} \ (1+o_k(1))$$ c k = 2.91 k ( 1 + o k ( 1 ) ) . Our bounds are constructive. We also show that$$c_3 \ge 2^{7/6}$$ c 3 2 7 / 6 , which disproves the conjecture for$$k=3$$ k = 3 . Connections to matching problems, power assignment problems, related problems, including algorithms, are discussed in this context. A slightly revised version of the Bollobás–Meir conjecture is proposed.

  4. Abstract The elliptic flow$$(v_2)$$ ( v 2 ) of$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$ D 0 mesons from beauty-hadron decays (non-prompt$${\textrm{D}}^{0})$$ D 0 ) was measured in midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair$$\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$$ s NN = 5.02  TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The$${\textrm{D}}^{0}$$ D 0 mesons were reconstructed at midrapidity$$(|y|<0.8)$$ ( | y | < 0.8 ) from their hadronic decay$$\mathrm {D^0 \rightarrow K^-\uppi ^+}$$ D 0 K - π + , in the transverse momentum interval$$2< p_{\textrm{T}} < 12$$ 2 < p T < 12  GeV/c. The result indicates a positive$$v_2$$ v 2 for non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$ D 0 mesons with a significance of 2.7$$\sigma $$ σ . The non-prompt$${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$$ D 0 -meson$$v_2$$ v 2 is lower than that of prompt non-strange D mesons with 3.2$$\sigma $$ σ significance in$$2< p_\textrm{T} < 8~\textrm{GeV}/c$$ 2 < p T < 8 GeV / c , and compatible with the$$v_2$$ v 2 of beauty-decay electrons. Theoretical calculations of beauty-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding medium describe the measurement within uncertainties.

  5. Abstract We study holomorphic mapsFfrom a smooth Levi non-degenerate real hypersurface$$ M_{\ell }\subset {\mathbb {C}}^n $$ M C n into a hyperquadric$$ {\mathbb {H}}_{\ell '}^N $$ H N with signatures$$ \ell \le (n-1)/2 $$ ( n - 1 ) / 2 and$$ \ell '\le (N-1)/2,$$ ( N - 1 ) / 2 , respectively. Assuming that$$ N - n < n - 1,$$ N - n < n - 1 , we prove that if$$ \ell = \ell ',$$ = , thenFis either CR transversal to$$ {\mathbb {H}}_{\ell }^N $$ H N at every point of$$ M_{\ell },$$ M , or it maps a neighborhood of$$ M_{\ell } $$ M in$$ {\mathbb {C}}^n $$ C n into$$ {\mathbb {H}}_{\ell }^N.$$ H N . Furthermore, in the case where$$ \ell ' > \ell ,$$ > , we show that ifFis not CR transversal at$$0\in M_\ell ,$$ 0 M , then it must be transversally flat. The latter is best possible.
