Title: Treelike structure of symmetry topological field theories and multisector QFTs
The global symmetries of a D -dimensional quantum field theory (QFT) can, in many cases, be captured in terms of a ( D + 1 )-dimensional symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). In this work we construct a ( D + 1 )-dimensional theory which governs the symmetries of QFTs with multiple sectors which have connected correlators that admit a decoupling limit. The associated symmetry field theory decomposes into a SymTree, namely a treelike structure of SymTFTs fused along possibly nontopological junctions. In string-realized multisector QFTs, these junctions are smoothed out in the extradimensional geometry, as we demonstrate in examples. We further use this perspective to study the fate of higher-form symmetries in the context of holographic large M averaging where the topological sectors of different large M replicas become dressed by additional extended operators associated with the SymTree. 1. In the 1 + 1 D ultralocal lattice Hamiltonian for staggered fermions with a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, there are two conserved, integer-valued charges that flow in the continuum limit to the vector and axial charges of a massless Dirac fermion with a perturbative anomaly. Each of the two lattice charges generates an ordinary U(1) global symmetry that acts locally on operators and can be gauged individually. Interestingly, they do not commute on a finite lattice and generate the Onsager algebra, but their commutator goes to zero in the continuum limit. The chiral anomaly is matched by this non-Abelian algebra, which is consistent with the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem. We further prove that the presence of these two conserved lattice charges forces the low-energy phase to be gapless, reminiscent of the consequence from perturbative anomalies of continuous global symmetries in continuum field theory. Upon bosonization, these two charges lead to two exact U(1) symmetries in the XX model that flow to the momentum and winding symmetries in the free boson conformal field theory. 2. R -parity can be extended to a continuous global U ( 1 ) R symmetry. We investigate whether an anomalous U ( 1 ) R can be identified as the Peccei-Quinn symmetry suitable for solving the strong C P problem within supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. In this case, U ( 1 ) R is broken at some intermediate scale and the quantum chromodynamics axion is the R -axion. Moreover, the R -symmetry can potentially be gauged via the Green-Schwarz mechanism within completions to supergravity, in order to evade the axion quality problem. Obstacles to realizing this scenario are highlighted and phenomenologically viable approaches are identified. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  3. We present a new gauging of maximal supergravity in five spacetime dimensions with gauge group containing ISO(5), involving the local scaling symmetry of the metric, and admitting a supersymmetric anti–de Sitter vacuum. We show this maximal supergravity to arise by consistent truncation of M theory on the (nonspherical, nonparallelizable) six-dimensional geometry associated to a stack of N M5 branes wrapped on a smooth Riemann surface. The existence of this truncation allows us to holographically determine the complete, universal spectrum of light operators of the dual four-dimensional N = 2 theory of class S . We then compute holographically the superconformal index of the dual field theory at large N , finding perfect agreement with previously known field theory results in specific limits. 4. Despite growing interest in beyond-group symmetries in quantum condensed matter systems, there are relatively few microscopic lattice models explicitly realizing these symmetries, and many phenomena have yet to be studied at the microscopic level. We introduce a one-dimensional stabilizer Hamiltonian composed of group-based Pauli operators whose ground state is a G × Rep ( G ) -symmetric state: the G -cluster state introduced by Brell []. We show that this state lies in a symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase protected by G × Rep ( G ) symmetry, distinct from the symmetric product state by a duality argument. We identify several signatures of SPT order, namely, protected edge modes, string order parameters, and topological response. We discuss how G -cluster states may be used as a universal resource for measurement-based quantum computation, explicitly working out the case where G is a semidirect product of Abelian groups. 5. We measure the time-integrated C P asymmetry in D 0 K S 0 K S 0 decays reconstructed in e + e c c ¯ events collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments. The corresponding data samples have integrated luminosities of 980 and 428 fb 1 , respectively. The D 0 decays are required to originate from the D * + D 0 π + decay, which determines the charm flavor at production time. A control sample of D 0 K + K decays is used to correct for production and detection asymmetries. The result, ( 1.4 ± 1.3 ( stat ) ± 0.1 ( syst ) ) % , is consistent with previous determinations and with C P symmetry. Published by the American Physical Society2025
