Title: Production of η and η′ mesons in pp and pPb collisions
The production of 𝜂 and 𝜂′ mesons is studied in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions collected with the LHCb detector. Proton-proton collisions are studied at center-of-mass energies of 5.02 and 13TeV and proton-lead collisions are studied at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 8.16TeV. The studies are performed in center-of-mass (c.m.) rapidity regions 2.5<𝑦c.m.<3.5 (forward rapidity) and −4.0<𝑦c.m.<−3.0 (backward rapidity) defined relative to the proton beam direction. The 𝜂 and 𝜂′ production cross sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum for 1.5<𝑝T<10GeV and 3<𝑝T<10GeV, respectively. The differential cross sections are used to calculate nuclear modification factors. The nuclear modification factors for 𝜂 and 𝜂′ mesons agree at both forward and backward rapidity, showing no significant evidence of mass dependence. The differential cross sections of 𝜂 mesons are also used to calculate 𝜂/𝜋0 cross-section ratios, which show evidence of a deviation from the world average. These studies offer new constraints on mass-dependent nuclear effects in heavy-ion collisions, as well as 𝜂 and 𝜂′ meson fragmentation.  more » « less

  1. A bstract The production cross-sections of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 5 TeV are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 . 13 ± 0 . 18 pb − 1 , collected by the LHCb experiment. The cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity, y , and separately for J/ψ mesons produced promptly and from beauty hadron decays (nonprompt). With the assumption of unpolarised J/ψ mesons, the production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic range 0 < p T < 20 GeV/ c and 2 . 0 < y < 4 . 5 are $$ {\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}{\sigma}_{\mathrm{prompt}}\ J/\psi =8.154\pm 0.010\pm 0.283\ \upmu \mathrm{b},\\ {}{\sigma}_{\mathrm{nonprompt}}\ J/\psi =0.820\pm 0.003\pm 0.034\ \upmu \mathrm{b},\end{array}} $$ σ prompt J / ψ = 8.154 ± 0.010 ± 0.283 μb , σ nonprompt J / ψ = 0.820 ± 0.003 ± 0.034 μb , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These cross-sections are compared with those at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 8 TeV and 13 TeV, and are used to update the measurement of the nuclear modification factor in proton-lead collisions for J/ψ mesons at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 TeV. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.

A bstract Inclusive J /ψ yields and average transverse momenta in p-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 8 . 16 TeV are measured as a function of the charged-particle pseudorapidity density with ALICE. The J /ψ mesons are reconstructed at forward (2 . 03 < y cms < 3 . 53) and backward ( − 4 . 46 < y cms < − 2 . 96) center-of-mass rapidity in their dimuon decay channel while the charged-particle pseudorapidity density is measured around midrapidity. The J /ψ yields at forward and backward rapidity normalized to their respective average values increase with the normalized charged-particle pseudorapidity density, the former showing a weaker increase than the latter. The normalized average transverse momenta at forward and backward rapidity manifest a steady increase from low to high charged-particle pseudorapidity density with a saturation beyond the average value.

  3. null (Ed.)
A bstract The inclusive production of the J/ ψ and ψ (2S) charmonium states is studied as a function of centrality in p-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 8 . 16 TeV at the LHC. The measurement is performed in the dimuon decay channel with the ALICE apparatus in the centre-of-mass rapidity intervals − 4 . 46 < y cms < − 2 . 96 (Pb-going direction) and 2 . 03 < y cms < 3 . 53 (p-going direction), down to zero transverse momentum ( p T ). The J/ ψ and ψ (2S) production cross sections are evaluated as a function of the collision centrality, estimated through the energy deposited in the zero degree calorimeter located in the Pb-going direction. The p T -differential J/ ψ production cross section is measured at backward and forward rapidity for several centrality classes, together with the corresponding average 〈 p T 〉 and $$ \left\langle {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^2\right\rangle $$ p T 2 values. The nuclear effects affecting the production of both charmonium states are studied using the nuclear modification factor. In the p-going direction, a suppression of the production of both charmonium states is observed, which seems to increase from peripheral to central collisions. In the Pb-going direction, however, the centrality dependence is different for the two states: the nuclear modification factor of the J/ ψ increases from below unity in peripheral collisions to above unity in central collisions, while for the ψ (2S) it stays below or consistent with unity for all centralities with no significant centrality dependence. The results are compared with measurements in p-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV and no significant dependence on the energy of the collision is observed. Finally, the results are compared with theoretical models implementing various nuclear matter effects.

  4. A bstract The production of the W ± bosons measured in p–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 8 . 16 TeV and Pb–Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5 . 02 TeV with ALICE at the LHC is presented. The W ± bosons are measured via their muonic decay channel, with the muon reconstructed in the pseudorapidity region − 4 < $$ {\eta}_{\textrm{lab}}^{\mu } $$ η lab μ < − 2 . 5 with transverse momentum $$ {p}_{\textrm{T}}^{\mu } $$ p T μ > 10 GeV /c . While in Pb–Pb collisions the measurements are performed in the forward (2 . 5 < $$ {y}_{\textrm{cms}}^{\mu } $$ y cms μ < 4) rapidity region, in p–Pb collisions, where the centre-of-mass frame is boosted with respect to the laboratory frame, the measurements are performed in the backward ( − 4 . 46 < $$ {y}_{\textrm{cms}}^{\mu } $$ y cms μ < − 2 . 96) and forward (2 . 03 < $$ {y}_{\textrm{cms}}^{\mu } $$ y cms μ < 3 . 53) rapidity regions. The W − and W + production cross sections, lepton-charge asymmetry, and nuclear modification factors are evaluated as a function of the muon rapidity. In order to study the production as a function of the p–Pb collision centrality, the production cross sections of the W − and W + bosons are combined and normalised to the average number of binary nucleon–nucleon collision 〈 N coll 〉. In Pb–Pb collisions, the same measurements are presented as a function of the collision centrality. Study of the binary scaling of the W ± -boson cross sections in p–Pb and Pb–Pb collisions is also reported. The results are compared with perturbative QCD calculations, with and without nuclear modifications of the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs), as well as with available data at the LHC. Significant deviations from the theory expectations are found in the two collision systems, indicating that the measurements can provide additional constraints for the determination of nuclear PDFs and in particular of the light-quark distributions.

  5. We provide an update on our semi-classical transport approach for quarkonium production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, focusing on J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons in 5.02 TeV Pb-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at both forward and mid-rapidity. In particular, we employ the most recent charm-production cross sections reported in pp collisions, which are pivotal for the magnitude of the regeneration contribution, and their modifications due to cold-nuclear-matter (CNM) effects. Multi-differential observables are calculated in terms of nuclear modification factors as a function of centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity, including the contributions from feeddown from bottom hadron decays. For our predictions for ψ(2S) production, the mechanism of sequential regeneration relative to the more strongly bound J/ψ meson plays an important role in interpreting recent ALICE data.
