Title: First-principles electron-phonon interactions and polarons in the parent cuprate La2CuO4
Understanding electronic interactions in high-temperature superconductors is an outstanding challenge. In the widely studied cuprate materials, experimental evidence points to strong electron-phonon ( e -ph) coupling and broad photoemission spectra. Yet, the microscopic origin of this behavior is not fully understood. Here, we study e -ph interactions and polarons in a prototypical parent (undoped) cuprate, La 2 CuO 4 (LCO), by means of first-principles calculations. Leveraging parameter-free Hubbard-corrected density functional theory, we obtain a ground state with the band gap and Cu magnetic moment in nearly exact agreement with experiments. This enables a quantitative characterization of e -ph interactions. Our calculations reveal two classes of longitudinal optical (LO) phonons with strong e -ph coupling to hole states. These modes consist of bond stretching and bond bending in the Cu-O plane as well as vibrations of apical O atoms. The hole spectral functions, obtained with a cumulant method that can capture strong e -ph coupling, exhibit broad quasiparticle peaks with a small spectral weight ( Z 0.25 ) and pronounced LO-phonon sidebands characteristic of polaron effects. Our calculations predict features observed in photoemission spectra, including a 40-meV peak in the e -ph coupling distribution function not explained by existing models. These results show that the universal strong e -ph coupling found experimentally in doped lanthanum cuprates is also present in the parent compound, and elucidate its microscopic origin.  more » « less

  1. In kagome metals, flat electronic bands induced by frustrated hopping are a platform for strong electron correlations. Here, we investigate the superconductivity in the kagome system LaRu 3 ( Si 1 x Ge x ) 2 by chemical pressure tuning while preserving the Ru- 4 d states that constitute the kagome flat bands. We observe a sizable enhancement in the density of states up to x = 0.07 , as determined by the specific heat, with a concomitant increase in the superconducting transition temperature T c . Ge dopants induce a uniaxial lattice expansion along the c axis. Our first-principles calculations suggest that this mitigates the detrimental effect of hybridization between kagome layers and reduces the dispersion of the Ru- d x 2 y 2 flat band. The calculated chemical potential moves closer to the maximum in the energy-dependent density of states. Our result is consistent with a theoretical prediction of tunable flat-band superconductivity in LaRu 3 Si 2 by mode-selective coupling between specific kagome phonons and the Ru- d x 2 y 2 orbitals.

  2. Ever since the discovery of the charge density wave (CDW) transition in the kagome metal CsV 3 Sb 5 , the nature of its symmetry breaking has been under intense debate. While evidence suggests that the rotational symmetry is already broken at the CDW transition temperature ( T CDW ), an additional electronic nematic instability well below T CDW has been reported based on the diverging elastoresistivity coefficient in the anisotropic channel ( m E 2 g ). Verifying the existence of a nematic transition below T CDW is not only critical for establishing the correct description of the CDW order parameter, but also important for understanding low-temperature superconductivity. Here, we report elastoresistivity measurements of CsV 3 Sb 5 using three different techniques probing both isotropic and anisotropic symmetry channels. Contrary to previous reports, we find the anisotropic elastoresistivity coefficient m E 2 g is temperature independent, except for a step jump at T CDW . The absence of nematic fluctuations is further substantiated by measurements of the elastocaloric effect, which show no enhancement associated with nematic susceptibility. On the other hand, the symmetric elastoresistivity coefficient m A 1 g increases below T CDW , reaching a peak value of 90 at T * = 20 K . Our results strongly indicate that the phase transition at T * is not nematic in nature and the previously reported diverging elastoresistivity is due to the contamination from the A 1 g channel. 3. We examine the bulk electronic structure of Nd 3 Ni 2 O 7 using Ni 2 p core-level hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy combined with density functional theory + dynamical mean-field theory. Our results reveal a large deviation of the Ni 3 d occupation from the formal Ni 2.5 + valency, highlighting the importance of the charge transfer from oxygen ligands. We find that the dominant d 8 configuration is accompanied by nearly equal contributions from d 7 and d 9 states, exhibiting an unusual valence state among Ni-based oxides. Finally, we discuss the Ni d x 2 y 2 and d z 2 orbital-dependent hybridization, correlation and local spin dynamics. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  4. FeTe 0.55 Se 0.45 (FTS) occupies a special spot in modern condensed matter physics at the intersections of electron correlation, topology, and unconventional superconductivity. The bulk electronic structure of FTS is predicted to be topologically nontrivial due to the band inversion between the d x z and p z bands along Γ Z . However, there remain debates in both the authenticity of the Dirac surface states (DSSs) and the experimental deviations of band structure from the theoretical band inversion picture. Here we resolve these debates through a comprehensive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy investigation. We first observe a persistent DSS independent of k z . Then, by comparing FTS with FeSe, which has no band inversion along Γ Z , we identify the spectral weight fingerprint of both the presence of the p z band and the inversion between the d x z and p z bands. Furthermore, we propose a renormalization scheme for the band structure under the framework of a tight-binding model preserving crystal symmetry. Our results highlight the significant influence of correlation on modifying the band structure and make a strong case for the existence of topological band structure in this unconventional superconductor. 5. Spin-forbidden ( Δ S 0 ) multiplet excitations and their coupling to magnetic properties are of increasing importance for magneto-optical studies of correlated materials. Nonetheless, the mechanisms for optically brightening these transitions and their generality remain poorly understood. Here, we report magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy on the van der Waals ferromagnet (FM) CrI 3 . Previously unreported spin-forbidden ( Δ S = 1 ) A 4 2 g E 2 g / T 2 1 g Cr 3 + d d excitations are observed near the ligand-to-metal charge-transfer excitation threshold. The assignment of these excitations and their Cr 3 + multiplet character is established through complementary Cr L 3 -edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements along with charge-transfer multiplet calculations and chemical trends in the chromium trihalide series ( Cr X 3 , X = Cl, Br, I). We utilize the high sensitivity of MCD spectroscopy to study the thickness-dependent optical response. The spin-forbidden excitations remain robust down to the monolayer limit, and we observe a significant magnetic-field dependence of the MCD spectrum across the antiferromagnetic-to-FM transition in few-layer samples. We preliminarily attribute this behavior to changes in the metal-ligand covalency with magnetic state. Our results clarify the magneto-optical response of CrI 3 and identify covalency as a central mechanism for the brightening and field tunability of spin-forbidden multiplet excitations.
