Abstract We analyze an optical atomic clock using two-photon transitions in rubidium. Four one- and two-color excitation schemes to probe the and fine-structure states are considered in detail. We compare key characteristics of Rb and two-photon clocks. The clock features a high signal-to-noise ratio due to two-photon decay at favorable wavelengths, low dc electric and magnetic susceptibilities, and minimal black-body shifts. Ac Stark shifts from the clock interrogation lasers are compensated by two-color Rabi-frequency matching. We identify a ‘magic’ wavelength near 1060 nm, which allows for in-trap, Doppler-free clock-transition interrogation with lattice-trapped cold atoms. From our analysis of clock statistics and systematics, we project a quantum-noise-limited relative clock stability at the -level, with integration timeτin seconds, and a relative accuracy of . We describe a potential architecture for implementing the proposed clock using a single telecom clock laser at 1550 nm, which is conducive to optical communication and long-distance clock comparisons. Our work could be of interest in efforts to realize small and portable Rb clocks and in high-precision measurements of atomic properties of Rb -states.

A functional renormalization group for signal detection and stochastic ergodicity breaking
Abstract Signal detection is one of the main challenges in data science. As often happens in data analysis, the signal in the data may be corrupted by noise. There is a wide range of techniques that aim to extract the relevant degrees of freedom from data. However, some problems remain difficult. This is notably the case for signal detection in almost continuous spectra when the signal-to-noise ratio is small enough. This paper follows a recent bibliographic line, which tackles this issue with field-theoretical methods. Previous analysis focused on equilibrium Boltzmann distributions for an effective field representing the degrees of freedom of data. It was possible to establish a relation between signal detection and -symmetry breaking. In this paper, we consider a stochastic field framework inspired by the so-called ‘model A’, and show that the ability to reach, or not reach, an equilibrium state is correlated with the shape of the dataset. In particular, by studying the renormalization group of the model, we show that the weak ergodicity prescription is always broken for signals that are small enough, when the data distribution is close to the Marchenko–Pastur law. This, in particular, enables the definition of a detection threshold in the regime where the signal-to-noise ratio is small enough.

Abstract We present a stellar dynamical mass measurement of a newly detected supermassive black hole (SMBH) at the center of the fast-rotating, massive elliptical galaxy NGC 2693 as part of the MASSIVE survey. We combine high signal-to-noise ratio integral field spectroscopy (IFS) from the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph with wide-field data from the Mitchell Spectrograph at McDonald Observatory to extract and model stellar kinematics of NGC 2693 from the central ∼150 pc out to ∼2.5 effective radii. Observations from Hubble Space Telescope WFC3 are used to determine the stellar light distribution. We perform fully triaxial Schwarzschild orbit modeling using the latest TriOS code and a Bayesian search in 6D galaxy model parameter space to determine NGC 2693's SMBH mass (MBH), stellar mass-to-light ratio, dark matter content, and intrinsic shape. We find and a triaxial intrinsic shape with axis ratiosp=b/a= 0.902 ± 0.009 and , triaxiality parameterT= 0.39 ± 0.04. In comparison, the best-fit orbit model in the axisymmetric limit and (cylindrical) Jeans anisotropic model of NGC 2693 prefer and , respectively. Neither model can account for the non-axisymmetric stellar velocity features present in the IFS data.more » « less

Abstract In the (special) smoothing spline problem one considers a variational problem with a quadratic data fidelity penalty and Laplacian regularization. Higher order regularity can be obtained via replacing the Laplacian regulariser with a poly-Laplacian regulariser. The methodology is readily adapted to graphs and here we consider graph poly-Laplacian regularization in a fully supervised, non-parametric, noise corrupted, regression problem. In particular, given a dataset$$\{x_i\}_{i=1}^n$$ and a set of noisy labels$$\{y_i\}_{i=1}^n\subset \mathbb {R}$$ we let$$u_n{:}\{x_i\}_{i=1}^n\rightarrow \mathbb {R}$$ be the minimizer of an energy which consists of a data fidelity term and an appropriately scaled graph poly-Laplacian term. When$$y_i = g(x_i)+\xi _i$$ , for iid noise$$\xi _i$$ , and using the geometric random graph, we identify (with high probability) the rate of convergence of$$u_n$$ togin the large data limit$$n\rightarrow \infty $$ . Furthermore, our rate is close to the known rate of convergence in the usual smoothing spline model.more » « less

Abstract Electronic structure and magnetic interactions of a Tb adatom on graphene are investigated from first principles using combination of density functional theory and multiconfigurational quantum chemistry techniques including spin–orbit coupling (SOC) . We determine that the six-fold symmetry hollow site is the preferred adsorption site and investigate electronic spectrum for different adatom oxidation states including Tb3+, Tb2+, Tb1+, and Tb0. For all charge states, the Tb configuration is retained with other adatom valence electrons being distributed over , , and single-electron orbitals. We find strong intra-site adatom exchange coupling that ensures that the spins are parallel to the4fspin. For Tb3+, the energy levels can be described by theJ = 6 multiplet split by the graphene crystal field (CF). For other oxidation states, the interaction of4felectrons with spin and orbital degrees of freedom of electrons in the presence of SOC results in the low-energy spectrum composed closely lying effective multiplets that are split by the graphene CF. Stable magnetic moment is predicted for Tb3+and Tb2+adatoms due to uniaxial magnetic anisotropy and effective anisotropy barrier around 440 cm−1controlled by the temperature assisted quantum tunneling of magnetization through the third excited doublet. On the other hand, in-plane magnetic anisotropy is found for Tb1+and Tb0adatoms. Our results indicate that the occupation of the orbitals can dramatically affect the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic moment stability of rare earth adatoms.more » « less

Abstract We study a magnitude-limited sample of 36 broad-lined type Ic supernovae (SNe Ic-BL) from the Zwicky Transient Facility Bright Transient Survey (detected between 2018 March and 2021 August), which is the largest systematic study of SNe Ic-BL done in literature thus far. We present the light curves (LCs) for each of the SNe and analyze the shape of the LCs to derive empirical parameters, along with the explosion epochs for every event. The sample has an average absolute peak magnitude in therband of mag. Using spectra obtained around peak light, we compute expansion velocities from the Feii5169 Å line for each event with high enough signal-to-noise ratio spectra, and find an average value of km s−1. We also compute bolometric LCs, study the blackbody temperature and radii evolution over time, and derive the explosion properties of the SNe. The explosion properties of the sample have average values of , , and erg. Thirteen events have radio observations from the Very Large Array, with eight detections and five non-detections. We find that the populations that have radio detections and radio non-detections are indistinct from one another with respect to their optically inferred explosion properties, and there are no statistically significant correlations present between the events’ radio luminosities and optically inferred explosion properties. This provides evidence that the explosion properties derived from optical data alone cannot give inferences about the radio properties of SNe Ic-BL and likely their relativistic jet formation mechanisms.more » « less
