Inertial confinement fusion (ICF) holds increasing promise as a potential source of abundant, clean energy, but has been impeded by defects such as micro-voids in the ablator layer of the fuel capsules. It is critical to understand how these micro-voids interact with the laser-driven shock waves that compress the fuel pellet. At the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), we utilized an x-ray pulse train with ns separation, an x-ray microscope, and an ultrafast x-ray imaging (UXI) detector to image shock wave interactions with micro-voids. To minimize the high- and low-frequency variations of the captured images, we incorporated principal component analysis (PCA) and image alignment for flat-field correction. After applying these techniques we generated phase and attenuation maps from a 2D hydrodynamic radiation code (xRAGE), which were used to simulate XPCI images that we qualitatively compare with experimental images, providing a one-to-one comparison for benchmarking material performance. Moreover, we implement a transport-of-intensity (TIE) based method to obtain the average projected mass density (areal density) of our experimental images, yielding insight into how defect-bearing ablator materials alter microstructural feature evolution, material compression, and shock wave propagation on ICF-relevant time scales.

                            Radiation and heat transport in divergent shock–bubble interactions
                        
                    
    
            Shock–bubble interactions (SBIs) are important across a wide range of physical systems. In inertial confinement fusion, interactions between laser-driven shocks and micro-voids in both ablators and foam targets generate instabilities that are a major obstacle in achieving ignition. Experiments imaging the collapse of such voids at high energy densities (HED) are constrained by spatial and temporal resolution, making simulations a vital tool in understanding these systems. In this study, we benchmark several radiation and thermal transport models in the xRAGE hydrodynamic code against experimental images of a collapsing mesoscale void during the passage of a 300 GPa shock. We also quantitatively examine the role of transport physics in the evolution of the SBI. This allows us to understand the dynamics of the interaction at timescales shorter than experimental imaging framerates. We find that all radiation models examined reproduce empirical shock velocities within experimental error. Radiation transport is found to reduce shock pressures by providing an additional energy pathway in the ablation region, but this effect is small (∼1% of total shock pressure). Employing a flux-limited Spitzer model for heat conduction, we find that flux limiters between 0.03 and 0.10 produce agreement with experimental velocities, suggesting that the system is well-within the Spitzer regime. Higher heat conduction is found to lower temperatures in the ablated plasma and to prevent secondary shocks at the ablation front, resulting in weaker primary shocks. Finally, we confirm that the SBI-driven instabilities observed in the HED regime are baroclinically driven, as in the low energy case.

            Abstract Nonradiative shocks accelerate particles and heat astrophysical plasmas. While supernova remnants are the most well-studied example, neutron star (NS) bow shocks are also nonradiative and Balmer dominated. NS bow shocks are likely ubiquitous in the interstellar medium due to their large speeds imparted at birth, and they are thought to be a discrete source population contributing to the Galactic cosmic-ray spectrum. To date, nine NS bow shocks have been directly observed in Hαimages. Most of these shocks have been characterized using narrowband Hαimaging and slit spectroscopy, which do not resolve the multicomponent velocity structure of the shocks and their spatial geometry. Here we present integral field spectroscopy of three NS bow shocks: J0742−2822, J1741−2054, and J2225+6535 (the Guitar Nebula). We measure the shock properties simultaneously in four dimensions: the 2D projected shock morphology, the radial velocity structure, and the Hαflux. The broad-to-narrow line ratio (Ib/In) is inferred from radial velocity profiles, and for J1741−2054, the narrow line is detected in multiple regions of the shock. The inferred line ratios and widths suggest that NS bow shocks represent a low-shock velocity regime (V≲ 200 km s−1) in whichIb/Inis high, distinct from the shock regime probed by supernova remnants. Our results illustrate a need for nonradiative shock models at velocities lower than previously considered, which will reveal the electron–ion temperature ratios and particle acceleration efficiencies of these bow shocks.more » « less

            Abstract Mass-loss influences stellar evolution, especially for massive stars with strong winds. Stellar wind bow shock nebulae driven by Galactic OB stars can be used to measure mass-loss rates ( ). The standoff distance (R0) between the star and the bow shock is set by momentum flux balance between the stellar wind and the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). We created the Milky Way Project: mass-loss rates for OB Stars driving infrared bow shocks (MOBStIRS) using the online Zooniverse citizen science platform. We enlisted several hundred students to measureR0and two other projected shape parameters for 764 cataloged infrared bow shocks. MOBStIRS incorporated 1528 JPEG cutout images produced from Spitzer GLIMPSE and MIPSGAL survey data. Measurements were aggregated to compute shape parameters for each bow shock image deemed high quality by participants. The average statistical uncertainty onR0is 12.5% but varies from <5% to ∼40% among individual bow shocks, contributing significantly to the total error budget of . The derived nebular morphologies agree well with (magneto) hydrodynamic simulations of bow shocks driven by the winds of OB stars moving atVa = 10–40 km s−1with respect to the ambient ISM. A systematic correction toR0to account for viewing angle appears unnecessary for computing . Slightly more than half of MOBStIRS bow shocks are asymmetric, which could indicate anisotropic stellar winds, ISM clumping on sub-pc scales, time-dependent instabilities, and/or misalignments between the local ISM magnetic field and the star-bow-shock axis.more » « less

            The evolution of non-uniform shocks produced by modulated laser irradiation or surface perturbations is relevant to studies of inertial confinement fusion and material properties at high-energy-density conditions. We present results from an experiment conducted at the OMEGA EP laser facility, where a 300 GPa shock was driven into a fused silica sample with pre-fabricated single-mode surface modulations. Using time-resolved optical velocimetry, we captured the continuous evolution of rippled shock motion, enabling a comprehensive mapping of the spatial amplitude history from formation to phase reversal in a single experiment. Initially, the ablation-driven shock inherits a fraction of the surface modulation amplitude from the sample, which subsequently grows before decaying, ultimately leading to the flattening of the rippled shock and a phase reversal. We find that two-dimensional inviscid hydrodynamic simulation of the experiment is able to qualitatively capture many aspects of the rippled shock evolution but over-predicts the initial amplitude growth. This experimental platform, capable of accommodating varying ripple wavelengths, lays the groundwork for a potential viscometry method at extreme pressures, where viscous effects manifest as differences in shock flattening times between rippled shocks of two distinct wavelengths propagating through the sample.more » « less

            A comprehensive understanding of heat transfer mechanisms and hydrodynamics during droplet impingement on a heated surface and subsequent evaporation is crucial for improving heat transfer models, optimizing surface engineering, and maximizing overall effectiveness. This work showcases findings related to heat transfer mechanisms and simultaneous tracking of the moving contact line (MCL) for subcooled impinging droplets across a range of surface temperatures, utilizing a custom MEMS device, at multiple impact velocities. Experimental results show that heat flux caused by droplet impingement has a weaker dependence on surface temperature than receding MCL heat transfer due to evaporation, which is significantly surface temperature dependent. The measurements also demonstrate that when a droplet impacts a heated surface and evaporates, the process can be divided into two segments based on the effective heat transfer rate: an initial conduction-dominated segment followed by another segment dominated by surface evaporation. For subcooled impinging droplets, the effect of oscillatory motion is found to be negligible, unlike in a superheated regime; hence, heat conduction into the droplet entirely governs the first segment. Results also show that heat flux at the solid-liquid interface of an impinging droplet increases with the rise of either impact velocity or surface temperature. In the subcooled regime, droplets impacting a heated surface have approximately 1.6 times higher vertical heat flux values than gently deposited droplets. Furthermore, this study quantifies the contributions of buoyancy and thermocapillary convection within the droplet to the overall heat transfer.more » « less
