We show that if and are linear transformations from to satisfying certain mild conditions, then, for any finite subset of , This result corrects and confirms the two-summand case of a conjecture of Bukh and is best possible up to the lower-order term for certain choices of and . As an application, we prove a lower bound for when is a finite set of real numbers and is an algebraic number. In particular, when is of the form for some , each taken as small as possible for such a representation, we show that This is again best possible up to the lower-order term and extends a recent result of Krachun and Petrov which treated the case .

Randomized Runge-Kutta-Nyström methods for unadjusted Hamiltonian and kinetic Langevin Monte Carlo
We introduce - and -order -accurate randomized Runge-Kutta-Nyström methods, tailored for approximating Hamiltonian flows within non-reversible Markov chain Monte Carlo samplers, such as unadjusted Hamiltonian Monte Carlo and unadjusted kinetic Langevin Monte Carlo. We establish quantitative -order -accuracy upper bounds under gradient and Hessian Lipschitz assumptions on the potential energy function. The numerical experiments demonstrate the superior efficiency of the proposed unadjusted samplers on a variety of well-behaved, high-dimensional target distributions.

We show that for primes with , the class number of is divisible by . Our methods are via congruences between Eisenstein series and cusp forms. In particular, we show that when , there is always a cusp form of weight and level whose th Fourier coefficient is congruent to modulo a prime above , for all primes . We use the Galois representation of such a cusp form to explicitly construct an unramified degree- extension of .more » « less

If is an ideal in a Gorenstein ring , and is Cohen-Macaulay, then the same is true for any linked ideal ; but such statements hold for residual intersections of higher codimension only under restrictive hypotheses, not satisfied even by ideals as simple as the ideal of minors of a generic matrix when . In this paper we initiate the study of a different sort of Cohen-Macaulay property that holds for certain general residual intersections of the maximal (interesting) codimension, one less than the analytic spread of . For example, suppose that is the residual intersection of by general quadratic forms in . In this situation we analyze and show that is a self-dual maximal Cohen-Macaulay -module with linear free resolution over . The technical heart of the paper is a result about ideals of analytic spread 1 whose high powers are linearly presented.more » « less

We formulate and prove a Conner–Floyd isomorphism for the algebraic K-theory of arbitrary qcqs derived schemes. To that end, we study a stable -category of non- -invariant motivic spectra, which turns out to be equivalent to the -category of fundamental motivic spectra satisfying elementary blowup excision, previously introduced by the first and third authors. We prove that this -category satisfies -homotopy invariance and weighted -homotopy invariance, which we use in place of -homotopy invariance to obtain analogues of several key results from -homotopy theory. These allow us in particular to define a universal oriented motivic -ring spectrum . We then prove that the algebraic K-theory of a qcqs derived scheme can be recovered from its -cohomology via a Conner–Floyd isomorphism\[ \]where is the Lazard ring and . Finally, we prove a Snaith theorem for the periodized version of .more » « less

Let be an ergodic -step nilsystem for . We adapt an argument of Parry [Topology 9 (1970), pp. 217–224] to show that decomposes as a sum of a subspace with discrete spectrum and a subspace of Lebesgue spectrum with infinite multiplicity. In particular, we generalize a result previously established by Host–Kra–Maass [J. Anal. Math.124(2014), pp. 261–295] for -step nilsystems and a result by Stepin [Uspehi Mat. Nauk24(1969), pp. 241–242] for nilsystems with connected, simply connected .more » « less
