This study proposes a novel technique for a 2D beam steering system using hybrid plasmonic phase shifters with a cylindrical configuration in a 2D periodic array suitable for LIDAR applications. A nanoscale VCSEP design facilitates a sub-wavelength spacing between individual phase shifters, yielding an expanded field of view and side lobes suppression. The proposed design includes a highly doped sub-micron silicon pillar covered by a thin layer of nonlinear material and an additional conductive metal layer. Characterization of a single VCSEP demonstrated a Free Spectral Range (FSR) of 53.28 ± 2.5 nm and a transmission variation of 3 dB, with VπL equal to 0.075 V-mm.

Vernier optical phased array lidar transceivers
Optical phased arrays (OPAs) which beam-steer in two dimensions (2D) are currently limited to grating row spacings well above a half wavelength. This gives rise to grating lobes along one axis which limit the field of view (FOV), introduce return signal ambiguity, and reduce the optical efficiency in lidar applications. We demonstrate a Vernier transceiver scheme which uses paired transmit and receive phased arrays with different row periodicities, leading to mismatched grating lobe angular spacings and only a single aligned pair of transmit and receive lobes. This permits a return signal from a target in the desired lobe to be efficiently coupled back into the receive OPA while back-scatter from the other grating lobes is rejected, removing the ambiguity. Our proposal goes beyond previously considered Vernier schemes in other domains like RF and sound, to enable adynamic Vernierwhere all beam directions are simultaneously Vernier aligned, and allow ultra-fast scanning, or multi-beam, operation with Vernier lobe suppression. We analyze two variants of grating lobe suppressing beam-steering configurations, one of which eliminates the FOV limitation, and find the conditions for optimal lobe suppression. We present the first, to the best of our knowledge, experimental demonstration of an OPA Vernier transceiver, including grating lobe suppression of 6.4 dB and beam steering across 5.5°. The demonstration is based on a pair of 2D-wavelength-steered serpentine OPAs. These results address the pervasive issue of grating lobes in integrated photonic lidar schemes, opening the way to larger FOVs and reduced complexity 2D beam-steering designs.

The design, fabrication, and characterization of a 16-element optical phased array (OPA) using a high index ( n = 3.1) silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRN) is demonstrated. We present one-dimensional beam steering with end-fire facet antennas over a wide steering range of >115° at a fixed wavelength of 1525 nm. A beam width of 6.3° has been measured at boresight, consistent with theory. We demonstrate SRN as a viable material choice for chip-scale OPA applications due to its high thermo-optic coefficient, high optical power handling capacity [negligible two-photon absorption (TPA)], wide transparency window, and CMOS compatibility.more » « less

Abstract|The experimental validation of reduced grating lobes in a seven-element, hexagonal, scanning phased array antenna with the one-wavelength element spacing is presented. The base element of the array is a single-layer, dual-mode antenna with self-scanning and nulling properties. For the selected scan angle of ¡30±, the required microstrip transmission line based feeding network, consisting of ring hybrids, power splitters, and branchline couplers, are designed and developed. A prototype of the complete array and feeding network was fabricated and successfully tested to show the e®ectiveness of the grating lobe reduction method using the dual-mode antenna elements in scanning phased array antennas with the one-wavelength element spacing.more » « less

Optical phased arrays (OPAs) are key enabling elements for solid-state LiDAR (light detection and ranging) and three-dimensional (3-D) imaging without bulk mechanical moving parts [1]. Solid state LiDARs are highly sought after for self-driving cars and autonomous vehicles [2,]. OPA's are also instrumental for free-space communications [3], optical switches [4], and holographic displays [5]. OPAs are capable of sophisticated beamforming such as scanning and simultaneous pointing/tracking of multiple objects. Narrow beam divergence and large field of views (FOVs) are desirable for these applications.more » « less

Optical phased array (OPA) is a key enabling element for solid state LIDAR (light detection and ranging). In this paper, we demonstrate a novel MEMS micromirror array OPA. Vertical combdrive actuators are integrated underneath the mirrors to achieve a small pitch (2.4μm) and a large field of view (22° at 905nm wavelength and 40° at 1550nm). The OPA has 2μs response time, and 10V actuation voltage.more » « less
