Title: Deconstructing Conceptions of Rigor in Computer Science Education
ObjectivesIn calls for excellent and equitable Computer Science (CS) education, the wordrigoroften appears, but it often goes undefined. The goal of this work is to understand how CS teachers, instructors, and students conceive of rigor. Research Questions:1) What do CS instructors think rigor is? and 2) What do students think rigor is? Methods:Using the principles of phenomenological research, we conducted a semi-structured interview study with 10 post-secondary CS students, 10 secondary CS teachers, and 9 post-secondary CS instructors, to understand their conceptions of rigor. Results:Analysis showed that no participants had the same understanding of rigor. We found that participants had abstractPrinciples of Rigorwhich included: Precision, Systematic Thought Process, Depth of Understanding, and Challenge. They also had concreteObservations of Rigorthat included Time and Effort, Intrinsic Drive, Productive Failure, Struggle, Outcomes, and Gatekeeping. Participants also sharedConditions for Rigorwhich included Expectations, Standards, Community Support, and Resources. Implications:Our data supports prior work that educators are using different definitions of rigor. This implies that each educator holds different expectations for students, without necessarily communicating these expectations to their students. In the best case, this might confuse students; in the worst case, it reinforces hegemonic norms which can lead to gatekeeping which prevents students from fully participating in the CS field. Based on these insights, we argue that to commit to the idea of quality CS learning, the community must discard the use of this concept of rigor to justify student learning and re-imagine alternate benchmarks.  more » « less

    ABSTRACT The 2011 reportVision and Change: A Call to Action(V&C) resulted from a national effort to rethink biology curriculum.V&Coutlines core concepts and core competencies for biology undergraduates and promotes evidence-based pedagogy, undergraduate research, and inclusive practices. However, it is unclear how much biology educators know aboutV&Cand what motivates educators’ development of their teaching philosophy and practices. We leveraged the Promoting Active Learning and Mentoring (PALM) Network, a group that introduced evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs) to instructors through mentoring, journal clubs, and a community of practice, to investigate how muchV&Chas influenced educator knowledge and motivation. Through focus groups, 16 mentors and 22 fellows were asked about their motivations to join PALM, familiarity withV&C, how they learned aboutV&C, and how PALM and/orV&Cshaped the development of their teaching philosophies and strategies. We found that the teaching philosophies and practices of these educators align strongly withV&Cprinciples.V&Cprovided expectancy (established value), while PALM contributed to greater instructor self-efficacy in EBIPs, overall resulting in reformed teaching philosophies and practices. This model highlights the importance of mentorship and community to successfully drive biology education reform.

  2. Although nodal spin-triplet topological superconductivity appears probable in uranium ditelluride (UTe2), its superconductive order parameter Δkremains unestablished. In theory, a distinctive identifier would be the existence of a superconductive topological surface band, which could facilitate zero-energy Andreev tunneling to an s-wave superconductor and also distinguish a chiral from a nonchiral Δkthrough enhanced s-wave proximity. In this study, we used s-wave superconductive scan tips and detected intense zero-energy Andreev conductance at the UTe2(0-11) termination surface. Imaging revealed subgap quasiparticle scattering interference signatures witha-axis orientation. The observed zero-energy Andreev peak splitting with enhanced s-wave proximity signifies that Δkof UTe2is a nonchiral state:B1u,B2u, orB3u. However, if the quasiparticle scattering along theaaxis is internodal, then a nonchiralB3ustate is the most consistent for UTe2

    Concurrent enrollment enables high school teachers approved by a partnering college or university to teach college-level coursework to their students. The collaborative research-practice partnership project CS-through-CE examines if and how concurrent enrollment (CE) programs can effectively broaden participation in computing for secondary students. In the CS-through-CE project two participating higher education institutions - Capital Community College (CCC) in Hartford, CT, and Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) in Marshall, MN - collaborated with the Mobile Computer Science Principles (CSP) team to train secondary teachers to teach the Mobile CSP course, and then offer the Mobile CSP course as a CE course. In this experience paper, faculty from CCC and SMSU detail their experiences recruiting secondary partners to teach Mobile CSP as a CE course, including the barriers and challenges encountered and the strategies identified for overcoming them. Additionally, participating secondary instructors from Hartford Trinity Magnet College Academy in Hartford, CT and Northeast Range School in Babbit, MN detail their experiences teaching Mobile CSP as a CE course in their high schools. They share their experiences teaching Mobile CSP as a CE course, contrast this experience to teaching the course in an Advanced Placement (AP) format, and detail the benefits they see in each modality. The experiences of the college faculty and secondary instructors in this paper are informative for any secondary or post-secondary educator interested in cultivating or expanding pathways in CS through concurrent enrollment.

  4. Problem. Currently, state- and district-level policies in the United States call for teachers to be qualified to teach computing in K-12 classrooms. Recognizing that equity-focused practices are key to reaching all students in computing and leveraging a researcher-practitioner partnership (RPP), we piloted an intervention designed to provide one-on-one coaching to teachers. Research Question. Our research questions for this project were: 1) What impact does CS coaching have on teacher capacity to implement equitable teaching practices? and 2) What, if any, changes to teacher practice are sustained during and after the CS coaching process? Methodology. Our mixed-methods study leveraged three primary forms of data from teachers who were coached (coachees) and teachers providing coaching (coaches). These included pre- and post-surveys, coaching logs, and self-reflection checklists. Findings. Participants reported use of high-impact instructional design and classroom practices increased significantly from pre- to post-intervention. Their abilities to discuss topics of identity and plan activities that use evidence-based, CS-specific teaching strategies saw the most dramatic increase from pre- to post-intervention. Implications. Coaching may be an impactful way to develop teacher’s use of equitable teaching practices.

    ABSTRACT Rhizopus microsporusis a necrotrophic post-harvest pathogen that causes significant economic losses in the agricultural sector. To explore alternatives to conventional management strategies for the mitigation of post-harvest infections, we investigated the potential of two previously identified endophyticBacillus velezensisstrains as biological control agents. Throughin vitroandin vivoexperiments, we examined the mechanisms of biocontrol displayed by twoB. velezensisstrains (KV10 and KV15) against threeR. microsporusstrains (W2-50, W2-51, and W2-58).In vitroassays assessed co-cultivability and the inhibitory effects ofB. velezensisagainstR. microsporus. The results demonstrated strain-specific antifungal activity with a reduction in fungal growth across treatments. Further analysis revealed that volatile organic compounds produced byB. velezensiscontributed to its antifungal properties. To evaluate the biocontrol efficacyin vivo, tomato fruits were inoculated withR. microsporusand subsequently treated withB. velezensis. The results support the strain-specific reduction in tomato spoilage, yielding various spoilage rates observed across treatments. Our findings highlight the potential ofB. velezensisas a promising biocontrol agent for the management ofR. microsporuspost-harvest infections in tomatoes. Further research is warranted to optimize the applicationof B. velezensisas a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach for controlling post-harvest diseases in tomatoes.IMPORTANCEOur study shows the significance of improving sustainable agriculture by offering an alternative to the use of chemical fungicides in post-harvest applications. Opportunistic fungal pathogens likeRhizopus microsporuscan have detrimental effects on post-harvest commodities like tomatoes. Post-harvest fungal infections are mainly controlled by chemical fungicides that pose health risks to humans and the environment. Utilizing biocontrol agents provides an environmentally safe alternative. Understanding the mechanisms of biocontrol employed by beneficial bacteria likeBacillus velezensison fungal pathogens gives insight into safer, more environmentally friendly alternatives to protect food crops. Our results suggest that targeted microbial solutions can mitigate post-harvest losses.
