Title: Poet and psychologist: A conversation
I consider poetry composition from both the “inside” view of a poet and the “outside” view of a cognitive psychologist. From the perspective of a psychologist, I review behavioral and neural studies of the reception and generation of poetry, with emphasis on metaphor and symbolism. Taking the perspective of a poet, I discuss how the seeds for a poem may arise. Finally, I consider the prospects for future developments in a field of computational neurocognitive poetics.  more » « less

  1. To enhance conceptual understanding of mathematical models for inventory management, we developed poetry-writing assignments for a required, upper-level undergraduate course in an industrial and systems engineering program. Specifically, two poetry-writing assignments were incorporated into an inventory and supply chain system design and control course. The first assignment, due one week before the first term exam, asked students to write a poem about a concept, model or topic related to deterministic inventory modeling. The second and assignment, due one week before the second term exam, asked the students to write a poem about a concept, model or topic related to stochastic inventory modeling. The students were also asked to respond to several open-ended questions on their approach to writing the poems and their assessment of the impact of these poetry writing on improving their conceptual understanding of the underlying mathematical models. Data was collected in Spring 2022 semester. The student written-poetry will be analyzed for correctness and to identify misunderstandings or gaps in understanding. In this paper, we will present our findings from the content analysis of student-written poetry and our preliminary findings on the effectiveness of poetry-writing assignments to enhance conceptual understanding of mathematical models for inventory management.

  2. In this invited editorial I acknowledge the need for greater efforts to translate both the identity and purpose of psychologists. I present a two-pronged approach involving building equitable representations of psychologists and opting into the usage of inclusive curricula. The former can begin with updates to career profiles and commercially available media for younger students while the latter helps to sustain the diverse legacy for the field. The aim of this invited editorial is to call us to broaden the opportunities for the next generation to understand what is meant by P is for psychologist.

  3. null (Ed.)
The publication of the centennial year of the Journal of Comparative Psychology is an occasion to reflect on the state of our discipline. In this article, I focus on one aspect of comparative psychology, namely comparative cognition. This focus stems from my long-standing interest in comparative cognition. The trends and challenges in comparative cognition share many of the trends and challenges in the broader field of comparative psychology. In the first part of this article, I outline my perspective on the field. Next, I consider challenges. I end with a section on prospects for the future.

  4. For language documentation to be sufficiently extensive to cover a given com- munity’s language practices (cf. Himmelmann 1998), then including verbal arts is essential to ensure the richness of that comprehensive record. The verbal arts span the creative and artistic uses of a given language by speakers, such as storytelling, songs, puns and poetry. In this paper, I demonstrate the significance of verbal arts documentation in three other ways. Drawing from Indigenous language community contexts in the United States, I describe how the verbal arts are relevant to linguistic theory, revitalization and training. First, the influence by verbal arts on phonological theory is attested, affirming that the collection and analysis of verbal arts data plays a significant role in the phonological analysis of a given language and in theories of phonology. Second, the verbal arts generate extremely useful examples in training models for language work, since such examples can be used to cultivate phonological awareness in learners and teachers. Third, the verbal arts provide culturally meaningful materials for language revitalization.

  5. In this paper, we consider secure outsourced growing databases (SOGDB) that support view-based query answering. These databases allow untrusted servers to privately maintain a materialized view. This allows servers to use only the materialized view for query processing instead of accessing the original data from which the view was derived. To tackle this, we devise a novel view-based SOGDB framework, Incshrink. The key features of this solution are: (i) Incshrink maintains the view using incremental MPC operators which eliminates the need for a trusted third party upfront, and (ii) to ensure high performance, Incshrink guarantees that the leakage satisfies DP in the presence of updates. To the best of our knowledge, there are no existing systems that have these properties. We demonstrate Incshrink's practical feasibility in terms of efficiency and accuracy with extensive experiments on real-world datasets and the TPC-ds benchmark. The evaluation results show that Incshrink provides a 3-way trade-off in terms of privacy, accuracy and efficiency, and offers at least a 7,800x performance advantage over standard SOGDB that do not support view-based query paradigm.
