Title: Strong Evidence for N9 and the Limits of Existence of Atomic Nuclei
The boundaries of the Chart of Nuclides contain exotic isotopes that possess extreme proton-toneutron asymmetries. Here we report on two of the most exotic proton-rich isotopes where at least one half of their constitute nucleons are unbound. While the ground state of 8C is a resonance, its first excited state lies in the diffuse borderland between nuclear states and fleeting scattering features. Evidence for 9N, with seven protons and two neutrons, is also presented. This extremely proton-rich system represents the first-known example of a ground-state five-proton emitter. The energies of these states are consistent with theoretical predictions of an open-quantum-system approach.  more » « less

The recent discovery and spectroscopic measurements of O 27 and O 28 suggests the disappearance of the N = 20 shell structure in these neutron-rich oxygen isotopes. We measured one- and two-proton removal cross sections from F 27 and Ne 29 , respectively, extracting spectroscopic factors and comparing them to shell model overlap functions coupled with eikonal reaction model calculations. The invariant mass technique was used to reconstruct the two-body ( O 24 + n ) and three-body ( O 24 + 2 n ) decay energies from knockout reactions of F 27 (106.2 MeV/u) and Ne 29 (112.8 MeV/u) beams impinging on a Be 9 target. The one-proton removal from F 27 strongly populated the ground state of O 26 and the extracted cross section of 3 . 4 1.5 + 0.3 mb agrees with eikonal model calculations that are normalized by the shell model spectroscopic factors and account for the systematic reduction factor observed for single nucleon removal reactions within the models used. For the two-proton removal reaction from Ne 29 an upper limit of 0.08 mb was extracted for populating states in O 27 decaying though the ground state of O 26 . The measured upper limit for the population of the ground state of O 26 in the two-proton removal reaction from Ne 29 indicates a significant difference in the underlying nuclear structure of F 27 and Ne 29 . 2. : The C 12 ( α , γ ) O 16 reaction, determining the survival of carbon in red giants, is of interest for nuclear reaction theory and nuclear astrophysics. A specific feature of the O 16 nuclear structure is the presence of two subthreshold bound states, (6.92 MeV, 2 + ) and (7.12 MeV, 1 ), that dominate the behavior of the low-energy S factor. The strength of these subthreshold states is determined by their asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs), which need to be known with high accuracy. : The objective of this research is to examine how the subthreshold and ground-state ANCs impact the low-energy S factor, especially at the key astrophysical energy of 300 keV . The S factors are calculated within the framework of the R -matrix method using the code. Our total S factor takes into account the E 1 and E 2 transitions to the ground state of O 16 including the interference of the subthreshold and higher resonances, which also interfere with the corresponding direct captures, and cascade radiative captures to the ground state of O 16 through four subthreshold states: 0 2 + , 3 , 2 + , and 1 . To evaluate the impact of subthreshold ANCs on the low-energy S factor, we employ two sets of the ANCs. The first selection, which offers higher ANC values, is attained through the extrapolation process [Blokhintsev , ]. The set with low ANC values was employed by deBoer []. A detailed comparison of the S factors at the most effective astrophysical energy of 300 keV is provided, along with an investigation into how the ground-state ANC affects this S factor. : The contribution to the total E 1 and E 2 S factors from the corresponding subthreshold resonances at 300 keV are ( 71 74 ) % and ( 102 103 ) % , respectively. The correlation of the uncertainties of the subthreshold ANCs with the E 1 and E 2 S ( 300 keV ) factors is found. The E 1 transition of the subthreshold resonance 1 does not depend on the ground-state ANC but interferes constructively with a broad ( 9.585 MeV ; 1 ) resonance giving (for the present subthreshold ANC) an additional 26 % contribution to the total E 1 S ( 300 keV ) factor. Interference of the E 2 transition through the subthreshold resonance 2 + with direct capture is almost negligible for small ground-state ANC of 58 fm 1 / 2 . However, its interference with direct capture for higher ground-state ANC of 337 fm 1 / 2 is significant and destructive, contributing 27 % . The low-energy S E 2 ( 300 keV ) factor experiences a smaller increase when both subthfreshold and the ground-state ANCs rise together due to their anticorrelation, compared to when only the subthreshold ANCs increase. Two complementary real-photon scattering experiments were conducted on the proton-magic 64Ni nucleus to study the dipole response up to its neutron-separation energy of 𝑆𝑛=9.7MeV. By combining both measurements, 87 𝐸⁢1 and 23 𝑀⁢1 transitions were identified above 4.3 MeV. The results of the observed 𝑀⁢1 transitions were compared to shell-model calculations using two different model spaces. It was found that the inclusion of excitations across the 𝑍=28 shell gap in the calculations has a large impact. Furthermore, average cross sections for decays to the ground state (elastic transitions) as well as to lower-lying excited states (inelastic decays) were determined. The corresponding 𝐸⁢1 channel was compared to calculations within the relativistic equation of motion (REOM) framework. Whereas the calculations of highest possible complexity reproduce the fragmentation and overall behavior of the 𝐸⁢1 average elastic cross section well, the predicted absolute cross sections are approximately twice as high as the experimental upper limits even though the latter also include an estimate of the inelastic-decay channel.

  4. Bound states of charm and anticharm quarks, known as charmonia, have a rich spectroscopic structure that can be used to probe the dynamics of hadron production in high-energy hadron collisions. Here, the cross section ratio of excited ( ψ ( 2 S ) ) and ground state ( J / ψ ) vector mesons is measured as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in proton-lead ( p Pb ) collisions at a center-of-mass (CM) energy per nucleon pair of 8.16 TeV. The data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb 1 were collected using the CMS detector. The ratio is measured separately for prompt and nonprompt charmonia in the transverse momentum range 6.5 < p T < 30 GeV and in four rapidity ranges spanning 2.865 < y CM < 1.935 . For the first time, a statistically significant multiplicity dependence of the prompt cross section ratio is observed in proton-nucleus collisions. There is no clear rapidity dependence in the ratio. The prompt measurements are compared with a theoretical model which includes interactions with nearby particles during the evolution of the system. These results provide additional constraints on hadronization models of heavy quarks in nuclear collisions.

  5. Background: The low-lying level structure of 13Be is still not fully understood; specifically, it has not been ruled out that the first 1/2− state could be located above the isomeric 0+ 2 state of 12Be and decay via that state. Purpose: Search for a possible decay path of 13Be excited states through the isomeric 0+ 2 state in 12Be. Method: The invariant mass technique was used to reconstruct (12Be + n) decay energies from neutron removal reactions of 14Be at 78 MeV/u on a 9Be target in coincidence with delayed γ rays. Charged particles and neutrons were detected and identified with a telescope and a subset of the Modular Neutron Array (MoNA), respectively, around zero degrees. The CAESium-iodide scintillator ARray (CAESAR) was located around the telescope measuring the γ rays. Results: No evidence for the population and decay of the 0+ 2 state in 12Be was observed. From the nonobservation of 511 keV γ rays an upper limit of 6% of the p-wave contribution was extracted. Conclusions: The previously observed p-wave resonance at about 500 keV does not decay via the isomeric state and thus corresponds to the ground state of 13Be decaying to the 12Be ground state.
