Collaborative mixed reality games enable shared social experiences, in which players interact with the physical and virtual game environment, and with other players in real-time. Recent advances in technology open a range of opportunities for designing new and innovative collaborative mixed reality games, but also raise questions around design, technical requirements, immersion, safety, and player experience. This workshop seeks to bring together researchers, designers, practitioners, and players to identify the most pressing challenges that need to be addressed in the next decade, discuss opportunities to overcome these challenges, and highlight lessons learned from past designs of such games. Participants will present their ideas, assemble and discuss a collection of related papers, outline a unifying research agenda, and engage in an outdoor game ideation and prototyping session. We anticipate that the CSCW community can contribute to designing the next generation of collaborative mixed reality games and technologies and to support the growth of research and development in this exciting and emerging area.

Designed for the Meta Quest 3, the game challenges players to complete realistic repair tasks reimagined as engaging tactile puzzles. As players tackle these challenges, a virtual assistant provides guidance, not only assisting with gameplay mechanics but also offering valuable insights into the real-world science behind their actions. Experience management (EM) agents in multiplayer serious games face unique challenges and responsibilities regarding the fair treatment of players. One such challenge is the Greedy Bandit Problem that arises when using traditional Multi-Armed Bandits (MABs) as EM agents, which results in some players routinely prioritized while others may be ignored. We will show that this problem can be a cause of player non-adherence in a multiplayer serious game played by human users. To mitigate this effect, we propose a new bandit strategy, the Shapley Bandit, which enforces fairness constraints in its treatment of players based on the Shapley Value. We evaluate our approach via simulation with virtual players, finding that the Shapley Bandit can be effective in providing more uniform treatment of players while incurring only a slight cost in overall performance to a typical greedy approach. Our findings highlight the importance of fair treatment among players as a goal of multiplayer EM agents and discuss how addressing this issue may lead to more effective agent operation overall. The study contributes to the understanding of player modeling and EM in serious games and provides a promising approach for balancing fairness and engagement in multiplayer environments.more » « less

Wearable computers are poised to impact disaster response, so there is a need to determine the best interfaces to support situation awareness, decision support, and communication. We present a disaster response wearable design created for a mixed reality live-action role playing design competition, the Icehouse Challenge. The challenge, an independent event in which the authors were competitors, offers a simulation game environment in which teams compete to test wearable designs. In this game, players move through a simulated disaster space that requires team coordination and physical exertion to mitigate virtual hazards and stabilize virtual victims. Our design was grounded in disaster response and team coordination practice. We present our design process to develop wearable computer interfaces that integrate physiological and virtual environmental sensor data and display actionable information through a head-mounted display. We reflect on our observations from the live game, discuss challenges, opportunities, and design implications for future disaster response wearables to support collaboration.more » « less

Guidelines on Successfully Porting Non-Immersive Games to Virtual Reality: A Case Study in MinecraftVirtual reality games have grown rapidly in popularity since the first consumer VR head-mounted displays were released in 2016, however comparatively little research has explored how this new medium impacts the experience of players. In this paper, we present a study exploring how user experience changes when playing Minecraft on the desktop and in immersive virtual reality. Fourteen players completed six 45 minute sessions, three played on the desktop and three in VR. The Gaming Experience Questionnaire, the i-Group presence questionnaire, and the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire were administered after each session, and players were interviewed at the end of the experiment. Participants strongly preferred playing Minecraft in VR, despite frustrations with using teleporation as a travel technique and feelings of simulator sickness. Players enjoyed using motion controls, but still continued to use indirect input under certain circumstances. This did not appear to negatively impact feelings of presence. We conclude with four lessons for game developers interested in porting their games to virtual reality.more » « less

The research investigates the design and development of a serious game to teach green building design and energy literacy in rural middle schools in the United States. The paper presents a pilot study, education mini-game development integrated with parametric BIM and energy simulations. The game scenario was built on the developed science curriculum modules in our funded research, teaching building energy technologies such as daylighting, artificial lighting, window configurations, building materials, solar panels, etc. The mini-game, Illumi’s World, presents a baseline science lab and a media library of typical public schools in the United States. The players have the opportunity to improve energy literacy in several ways: manipulating the building configurations and the energy options, reviewing energy costs and emission level changes, and monitoring the performance from the game dashboards. This paper presents background theory, curriculum design, the mini-game development framework, methods and tools for energy simulation and BIM visualization, and the findings and challenges.more » « less
