K-12 schools utilize a growing number of technologies to operate effectively, ranging from technologies for learning to technologies that manage student and personnel data. We share findings from an analysis of 23 school district websites for technologies used in a number of K-12 school districts surrounding a public, research university in a southeast region of the United States. In addition, we also share findings on technologies used in K-12 school districts from interviews with 12 technology directors. We propose a technology classification framework including educational technologies, management technologies, support technologies, networking technologies, and security technologies in addition to identifying various technologies that are currently used by school districts based on this framework. This framework has implications for K-12 technology adoption and clarifying the roles of school technology personnel.

How to Grow a K-12 Computer Science Pathway: Advice from Midwest School Districts
Problem. As school districts develop K-12 computer science pathways, they seek guidance and examples from other districts with established pathways. Research Question. Our research question for this project was: How have K-12 school districts in a Midwest state built and implemented a K-12 CS pathway? Methodology. We conducted virtual interviews with 15 representatives from 11 Midwest school districts on developing CS pathways, using a semi-structured protocol and thematic analysis. Findings. CS pathways are often initiated by champions, frequently beginning in high school and progressing to elementary then middle school. CS teachers find it challenging to meet, a variety of funding sources are used, and equity often focuses on student enrollment. Implications. Many school districts need to create CS pathways while others continue to build and refine their pathways; many of whom desire support in that process. The findings can be used by districts, support organizations and policymakers to inform the development of CS pathways.

Research Problem: K-12 school systems are racing to implement Computer Science (CS) education within classrooms across the United States. Prior research on education reform movements suggests that without rigorous research, combined with careful technical support for implementation, we should expect wide variation across districts in how they choose to implement computer science education as well as extreme inequality in which districts provide equitable opportunities to learn CS, with the most underserved students fairing the worst (Ahn & Quarles, 2016; Bryk, Gomez, Grunow, & LeMahieu, 2015; Carlson, Borman, & Robinson, 2011; Gordon and Heck, 2019). It stands to reason that these same challenges are at play in the CS subfield of cybersecurity. Research Question: In what ways does the JROTC-CS experience impact the cognitive (e.g. knowledge and skills) and non-cognitive factors (e.g. social and emotional behaviors) of cadets in high school? Methodology: We used a qualitative study using a semi-structured interview protocol with JROTC cadets attending the schools involved in the intervention (n=17). The interview protocol focused on the types of cognitive and non-cognitive impacts the cadets experienced when participating in CS and Cybersecurity learning experiences. Data Collection: We conducted interviews with 17 cadets and coded the transcripts using a priori codes. Findings: Sixteen of the students reported an increase in their knowledge and skills through self-reported grades and self-perceived knowledge gained through the CS and cybersecurity experiences. While all of the students indicated that the courses and extracurricular activities were beneficial and interesting, only two of the students indicated they wanted to have a career in the computer science or cybersecurity field. However, the findings indicated a lack of school personnel support, specifically at the guidance counselor level. Finally, all of the students reported a strong sense of belonging in their CS and cybersecurity experiences leading to increased peer collaboration and support. Implications: Based on other evidence collected during the intervention, the intervention had multiple successes in expanding equitable experiences for cadets in the schools involved in the study. Guidance counselors and other personnel who are in a position to influence the future career choices of cadets may need more professional development; however, more research is needed to understand the ways in which they currently influence cadets.more » « less

Within K-12 computing education, the building blocks that contribute to student success and equitable outcomes are broadly captured in the CAPE framework (i.e., capacity, access, participation, experience). However, these broad com- ponents provide limited detail on the important factors that can support academic achievement, particularly within each component. Our research question for this study was: What are factors comprising each component of CAPE that support academic achievement among K-12 CS students?To answer this question, we first created an a priori set of factors based on previous research findings that have been found to contribute to academic achievement. After organizing these factors within each CAPE component, we conducted a systematic mapping review of K-12 CS education research (2019-2021) (n = 196) from publicly available peer-reviewed articles from the K-12 CS Education Research Resource Center. Through this mapping, we identified an additional set of factors that have been studied by CS education researchers and added these to our set of factors. More importantly, we found that capacity was the component investigated the most frequently and access was the least. There are many areas (or categories) within each component that remain unstudied (i.e., dual credit offerings, career guidance), even though they play a role in computing education. The expanded CAPE framework is now publicly available and can be used to inform researchers and practitioners about what each CAPE component comprises. These factors are accompanied by descriptions of each factor. Not only does it highlight the many factors to be considered when designing and delivering computing education to K-12 students, it also provides a solid framework for future research that synthesizes or analyzes homogeneous factors or explores how various factors may be correlated.more » « less

K-12 computer science (CS) teachers are often the only teachers of the subject at their school. Many school-based administrators and personnel lack the content knowledge to support their ongoing professional growth. How then can an ecosystem of support be developed to support K-12 CS teachers? We have created several tools aligned to the CSTA Standards for CS Teachers that support administrators, instructional specialists, and teacher leaders to provide evidence-based feedback and promote the ongoing development of CS teachers at their schools. These tools, including a CS coaching toolkit and instructional practice evidence guide, have the potential to drive impactful, job-embedded development.more » « less

The dearth of women and people of color in the field of computer science is a well-documented phenomenon. Following Obama's 2016 declaration of the need for a nationwide CS for All movement in the US, educators, school districts, states and the US-based National Science Foundation have responded with an explosion of activity directed at developing computer science learning opportunities in K-12 settings. A major component of this effort is the creation of equitable CS learning opportunities for underrepresented populations. As a result, there exists a strong need for educational research on the development of equity-based theory and practice in CS education. This poster session reports on a work-in-progress study that uses a case study approach to engage twenty in-service elementary school teachers in reflecting on issues of equity in CS education as part of a three-day CS professional development workshop. Our work is unfolding in the context of a four-year university/district research practice partnership in a mid-sized city in the Northeastern United States. Teachers in our project are working to co-design integrated CS curriculum units for K-5 classrooms. We developed four case studies, drawn from the first year of our project, that highlight equity challenges teachers faced in the classroom when implementing the CS lessons. The case studies follow the "Teacher Moments" template created by the Teaching Systems Lab in Open Learning at MIT. The case study activity is meant to deepen reflection and discussion on how to create equitable learning opportunities for elementary school students. We present preliminary findings.more » « less
