Primary forests play a crucial role in providing essential ecosystem services and supporting biodiversity compared to secondary forests. With increasing threats from extreme climate events and human activities, monitoring primary forest loss is critical for understanding the impact of these threats on ecosystems and biodiversity. Dense time series data from remotely sensed satellite imagery allow us to track historical disturbances, making it an effective source for mapping primary forests over time. However, distinguishing between primary and secondary forests based on spectral-temporal information remains challenging as primary forests can show high resilience to certain natural disturbances (e.g., drought), and secondary forests may not have experienced any disturbance during the satellite observation period. In this context, this study aims to map primary forests on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola using the time series approach and resilience metrics given that primary forests tend to be more resilient than secondary forests. To achieve this, we used spectral-temporal features from COntinuous monitoring of Land Disturbance (COLD) algorithm based on all available Landsat data between 1984 and 2023. Additionally, a resilience map is generated from deseasonalized and detrended spectral observations using the lag-1 autocorrelation method. Then, a Random Forest model was employed to generate an annual primary forest map.more » « less

Lamberg, T. (Ed.)Our paper details the ways teachers understand and navigate equity-oriented dilemmas (Berlak & Berlak, 1981) when teaching mathematical modeling and how mathematics teacher educators can support teachers’ learning of culturally responsive mathematics teaching. Using Zavala and Aguirre’s (in press) framework for culturally responsive mathematics teaching, we explored the ways teachers describe and frame their choices when faced with dilemmas. Findings revealed that teachers identified dilemmas with Rigor and Support most often, followed by Knowledges and Identities. Dilemmas related to Power and Participation occurred far less frequently. Implications for teacher professional development are discussed.more » « less

Lamberg, T. (Ed.)There is growing recognition that mathematical modeling can be a lever for equity in elementary mathematics classrooms. This study focuses on the impact of a professional development program focused on culturally responsive mathematical modeling on 8 kindergarten through 2nd grade teachers’ practices in modeling lessons. We use a project developed observation tool to evaluate two video recorded modeling lessons from each teacher (16 total). Findings focus on patterns in the strengths and challenges in primary grade teachers’ practices for teaching modeling, including how teachers’ practices align with culturally responsive teaching. We discuss implications of our findings for the design and refinement of professional development.more » « less

Resisting marginalization with culturally responsive mathematical modeling in elementary classrooms.Mathematical modeling (MM) - a cyclical process that involves using mathematics to make-sense of and analyze relevant, real-world situations - has the potential to advance equity and challenge spaces of marginalization in the elementary mathematics classroom. When informed by culturally responsive teaching practices, MM creates opportunities to center the knowledge and experiences that students from diverse racial, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds bring to the classroom as valuable resources to support learning and inform action. It can disrupt power and status hierarchies in the classroom that contribute to structural and ideological marginalization. This paper describes ways teachers connected their teaching of MM with key components of a culturally responsive mathematics teaching framework. Analysis synthesizes data from an innovative, research-based professional development for elementary teachers to support teacher learning of equity centered, culturally responsive MM instruction. Data sources include end of year teacher interviews, and professional development discussions from 19 teachers at four geographically, racially, and culturally diverse sites. Findings focus on how teachers connected their teaching of MM with key dimensions of culturally responsive mathematics teaching, and affordances and challenges related to resisting ideological and structural forms of marginalization.more » « less

The global trend of energy deregulation has led to the market mechanism replacing some functionality of load frequency control (LFC). Accordingly, information exchange among participating generators and the market operator plays a crucial role in optimizing social utility. However, privacy has been an equally pressing concern in such settings. This conflict between individuals’ privacy and social utility has been a long-standing challenge in market mechanism literature as well as in Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs). In this paper, we propose a novel encrypted market architecture that leverages a hybrid encryption method and two-party computation protocols, enabling the secure synthesis and implementation of an optimal price based market mechanism. This work spotlights the importance of secure and efficient outsourcing of controller synthesis, which is a critical element within the proposed framework. A two-area LFC model is used to conduct a case study.more » « less
